CH 3: Section 3 - Clinical Education Supervision and Clinical Skill Development Policy

Clinical education is supervised by UNL Athletic Training Program (UNL ATP)–trained preceptors, who are licensed and credentialed health care providers.

Athletic training students (ATS) may only perform athletic training skills when their preceptor is physically present and able to intervene on behalf of the student and the patient if necessary. Supervision cannot occur remotely (e.g., by phone or two-way radio). If a preceptor must briefly step away, the ATS may not perform athletic training duties until the preceptor returns. The only exception is when an ATS holds a current certification or appropriate state license for a specific skill.

The UNL ATP views supervision as more than oversight—it is an opportunity for mentorship. Preceptors guide students through clinical decision-making, helping them gradually build autonomy and develop into competent, professional clinicians.
