SECD Brown Bag sessions return Sept. 7

The Department of Special Education and Communication Disorders has scheduled six brown bag sessions during the fall semester, beginning Friday, Sept. 7. All presentations are set to begin at 11 a.m. in room 101 of the Barkley Memorial Center.

Carly Dinnes, Kelly Malcolm selected for ASHA Student Research Travel Awards

Carly Dinnes, a Ph.D. candidate in Human Sciences, and Kelly Malcolm, a third-year student in the Clinical Doctorate in Audiology (Au.D.) program, have been selected as recipients of the Student Research Travel Award to attend the 2018 American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA) Convention Nov. 15-17, in Boston.

Stacie Ray named finalist for 2018 Inspire Award for Excellence in Education

SECD associate professor of practice Stacie Ray has been named one of three finalists for the 2018 Inspire Award for Excellence in Education. The 2018 Inspire Awards ceremony, hosted by the Lincoln Journal-Star, will be held at noon Wednesday, Sept. 12, at Pinnacle Bank Arena.

Peng Peng selected for Early Career Award from International Dyslexia Association

University of Nebraska-Lincoln assistant professor Peng Peng was named the recipient of the 2018 Early Career Award for Contributions to Research from the International Dyslexia Association (IDA). 

The award is given in recognition of innovative research that is likely to have a positive impact on the lives of individuals with dyslexia. As the 2018 recipient, Peng Peng will be presented with the award at the Reading, Literacy & Learning Conference, IDA’s annual conference, in October.

HearU Nebraska to benefit from Lincoln Saltdogs’ Deaf & Hard of Hearing Night July 18

HearU Nebraska will be featured during the Lincoln Saltdogs’ annual Nebraska Commission for the Deaf & Hard of Hearing Night scheduled for Wednesday, July 18, at Haymarket Park in Lincoln. 

A portion of proceeds from ticket sales at the game will be donated to HearU Nebraska, a hearing aid bank housed in the Barkley Memorial Center on East Campus that provides hearing aids to children ages 0-18 years throughout Nebraska whose families might not otherwise be able to afford them.

Alaina Bassett set to end decade-long journey at Barkley Memorial Center with dissertation defense

Alaina Bassett jokes that she wanted to be a veterinarian but she didn’t want to go to school for eight years. That was 10 years ago, before she began her journey at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln where she will soon complete her third degree.
