Nebraska to offer new deaf education, speech-language pathology interdisciplinary training

SECD announces 2019-20 graduate open house dates

SECD is hosting five open houses during the 2019-20 academic year for prospective students to learn about its graduate programs. The first open house focuses on the special education program, while the remaining four are for students interested in the speech-language pathology and audiology graduate programs.

Adrienne Pitt joins SECD speech-language pathology faculty

Adrienne Pitt’s interest in helping individuals with special needs was first piqued when she was in elementary school, and it led her to a career in speech-language pathology. Now, she hopes she can help speech-language pathology students in SECD develop that same passion about caring for others.

Nebraska CEC conference set for Sept. 27 on East Campus

The Nebraska Council for Exceptional Children (CEC) will hold its annual conference Friday, Sept. 27, at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln’s Nebraska East Union.

The conference, which is scheduled to run from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m., is open to anyone supporting students with special needs, including special education and general education teachers, para-educators, administrators, researchers, students and parents.

Eric Caruso brings orientation and mobility training to Nebraska

Growing up in a small farming community in north New Jersey, Eric Caruso’s family raised puppies for The Seeing Eye, an organization that raises and trains guide dogs for blind people. Now, as an assistant professor of practice at Nebraska, he will develop and coordinate a new program to train orientation and mobility specialists to work with people who are blind or visually impaired.

Sevier leads development of comprehensive cochlear implant services at Barkley Clinic

A year ago, Josh Sevier was in the beginning stages of establishing the Cochlear Implant Program at the Barkley Speech Language and Hearing Clinic. His vision for a team approach to providing cochlear implant services has now come to fruition, with eight cochlear implant activations completed at the Barkley Memorial Center and five more individuals in process to have surgery.
