Presenting the 2016 CEHS Awards

The College of Education and Human Sciences at the University of Nebraska­–Lincoln will present its annual CEHS awards at 10 a.m., April 22 at the Sheldon Museum of Art, with a reception following. All CEHS faculty, staff, friends and family are invited to attend. The College of Education and Human Sciences is pleased to announce the following award recipients.

Amanda Valentine Receives Early Achiever Award

Amanda Valentine, 2004 graduate of the College of Education & Human Sciences recently received a Nebraska Alumni Assocociate Early Achiever Award.   Amanda Valentine runs her own clothing line, Valentine Valentine, in Nashville.  After earning a UN degree in clothing and textile design, she shadowed the fashion stylist of her brother's band and then began apprenticing under LA's top stylists.

Elements - Biennial Runway Show

The College of Education and Human Sciences' Textiles, Merchandising & Fashion Design students are teaming up once again with students from across the UNL campus to present their biennial runway show, taking place this year on Earth Day, Friday April 22, in the Nebraska Union’s Centennial Ballroom.

TMFD’s Burton awarded UNL Arts and Humanities grant

With grant support from the UNL Arts and Humanities Research Enhancement Program, Michael Burton, assistant professor of practice in the Department of Textiles, Merchandising and Fashion Design, and William Thomas, professor in the UNL Department of History, are getting underway with a unique digital media production titled “No Ordinary People.” The short format animation will feature “Anna,” an enslaved women who in November of 1815 threw herself out of a third floor window in Washington, D.C., rather than be sold south and taken away from her husband and family. Upon completion

Quilt scholar Dr. Virginia Gunn to present public lecture Dec. 6

Part English, Part German, Fully American:  Influences on Red & Green Appliqued Quilts, a free public lecture will be presented by Dr. Virginia Gunn a quilt scholar, author, and professor at the University of Akron on December 6, 2015 at 2:00 p.m., Home Economics Building Room 31.

CEHS Student Research and Creative Activity Fair Nov. 14

CEHS undergraduate and graduate students will share their work with fellow students, faculty and other educators and community members Saturday, Nov. 14 at Teachers College Hall and the Henzlik Hub. Other UNL students and recent alums who have engaged in the study of education and/or human sciences have also been invited to share.

The aim of the conference is to give students an opportunity to showcase their work and dialogue with peers and mentors about important issues in education and the human sciences.

Nebraska youth, 10-19 years of age, will have their work showcased in the 22nd annual Celebration of Youth: Work by 4-H Youth, Oct. 12-Nov. 14 in the Robert Hillestad Gallery located in the Home Economics Building on East Campus at UNL.

James featured in textileartist.org Q&A

Michael James, chair of the Department of Textiles, Merchandising and Fashion Design, was recently featured in an online Q&A article on the website textileartist.org. James is a distinguished leader in the art quilt movement and currently has an exhibition of his most recent work at the International Quilt Study Center and Museum. "Ambiguity & Enigma: Recent Quilts by Michael James" runs through Feb. 20, 2016.

Major CEHS initiative invests in early childhood

Responding to changing demographics and a growing population of young at-risk children, the University of Nebraska-Lincoln today announced a strategic initiative to strengthen support for early childhood development in Nebraska.

Chancellor Harvey Perlman, Dean of the College of Education and Human Sciences Marjorie Kostelnik, Lt. Gov. Mike Foley and others shared the plans at the Van Brunt Visitors Center.

IQSCM receives NAC grant

The International Quilt Study Center & Museum (IQSCM) announced July 7, 2015 that it has been awarded a grant of $27,540 by the Nebraska Arts Council. This grant will support the museum’s programs, operations and exhibitions during 2015-2016 fiscal year.
