Weiss awarded Fulbright Scholarship to continue work in India

Wendy Weiss, professor and director of the Robert Hillestad Textiles Gallery  at  the University of Nebraska has been awarded a Fulbright-Nehru Senior Scholar grant to to continue her research in Gujarat, India during the 2014-2015 academic year, the United States Department of State and the J. William Fulbright Foreign Scholarship Board announced.

"Complexity," a juried exhibition, opens at Hillstead Gallery Apr. 7-May 9

Complex Weavers announces its biennial international juried exhibition “Complexity”, featuring works employing complex weave structures that interlace threads and fibers in ways beyond plain weave. The opening reception for this touring exhibition, will be Sunday, April 6 from 1:00 to 3:00 p.m. at the Robert Hillestad Textiles Gallery in CEHS, Home Economics Building. According to the show organizers, “complex weaving is defined by the cloth produced and the mind it took to create it, not by the equipment used.” The exhibit runs from April 7 through May 9, 2014.

"Farm Waste Fashionistas" program highlights CEHS scientist Yiqi Yang

“In the near future, when you reach for your favorite shirt or sweater – textile scientist Yiqi Yang wants you to thank CORN – not cotton – for that soft, comfortable feel.

Corn?  Yup.

Yang thinks part of the world’s most abundant grain may one day rival cotton as the future of textiles.

Retail execs highlight Big Idea Seminar

Textiles, Merchandising and Fashion Design is participating in UNL’s Big Idea Seminar Mar. 18-19. Designed to build big ideas and collaborations among UNL faculty, the Big Idea Seminar series covers a broad area of research topics that emphasize team building opportunities.

The Mar. Big Idea Seminar highlights “Concept to Commercialization” and features three successful retail and manufacturing entrepreneurs: Walter T. Wilhelm, Joan Mudget, and Paul Taylor.

New Hillestad exhibition features Japanese kimonos

"Japan and Fashion: Influence and Impact" opens in the Robert Hillestad Textiles Gallery on Monday, Feb. 24, 2014. The exhibit, curated by Barbara Trout, features Japanese influenced garments from the Department of Textiles, Merchandising & Fashion Design’s historic costume collection, along with traditional Japanese garments on loan for the exhibition. The exhibit is devoted to the interface between traditional Japanese dress and contemporary Western fashion.

Wilson to give talks and presentation on Japanese textiles Feb. 20

Elizabeth Wilson, an expert on Japanese textiles and a successful business woman, will visit CEHS Feb. 20, 2014, to share the history and workings of her unique business Asiatica in Kansas City.  Wilson turned a longstanding interest in Japanese textiles and dress into a unique concept store, recognized for its fine Asian-inspired products. Asiatica’s showroom offers elegant “house brand,” ready-to-wear Japanese accessories and textiles as well as antiques and unique items for the home that Elizabeth buys on her yearly trips to Japan.

"Capturing a Style" opens Jan. 22, 2014 in the Robert Hillestad Textiles Gallery

"Capturing a Style" opens Jan. 22, 2014 and continues on exhibition at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln’s Robert Hillestad Textiles Gallery through Feb. 14.  A public reception at the gallery will be held Friday, Feb. 7, from 6-8 p.m.  A gallery talk by the artist, Lindsay Ducey, will start at 6:30 p.m. in the gallery.

Lindsay Ducey, graduate student in the department of Textiles, Merchandising and Fashion Design, completed the collection of original garments and illustrations as part of her thesis work, with Dr. Barbara Trout serving as major professor.

James art work on display in US embassy in Tiblisi, Georgia

Michael James, chair of Textiles, Merchandising and Fashion Design, has one of his creations on exhibit at the U.S. Embassy in Tbilisi, Georgia. His digitally-developed and digitally-printed wall quilt is part of the U.S. Department of State’s ART in Embassies program. His piece is titled “The Forgetting.” A description of Dr. James’ quilt can be found in an attractive brochure about the Tbilisi exhibit.

Smucker, TMFD graduate, has book listed on 2013 "New York Times" gift guide

Having your book included on the “New York Times” Holiday Gift Guide is an honor and distinction that UNL graduate Janneken Smucker recently earned. Her book, “Amish Quilts: Crafting an American Icon,” is on the Times list of antique coffee table books to purchase. Smucker, assistant professor of history at West Chester University in West Chester, PA, completed her master’s degree in textile history from the Department of Textiles, Merchandising and Fashion Design in UNL’s College of Education and Human Sciences in 2003.
