History and practice of Pichvais paintings explored in Talwar lecture Oct. 14

The Robert Hillestad Textiles Gallery will host a lecture on October 14 at 2:00 p.m. in Room 11 of the Human Sciences Building on the University of Nebraska-Lincoln’s East Campus titled “Making the Desert Bloom: Painted Textiles for a Krishna Temple” by Kay Talwar. The lecture is free and open to all and will be followed by a reception in the gallery on the building’s second level.

Krishna art and culture explored in Ghose lecture Sept. 13

The Robert Hillestad Textiles Gallery will host a lecture titled “The Artists of Nathdwara: Traditions and Contexts” by Madhuvanti Ghose, Alsdorf Associate Curator of Indian, Southeast Asian, Himalayan and Islamic Art at the Art Institute of Chicago, at 5 p.m., Sept. 13 in Room 11 of the Human Sciences Building on the University of Nebraska–Lincoln's East Campus. The lecture is free and open to all and will be followed by a reception in the gallery on the building's second level.

Indian Pichvai painting featured in latest Hillestad Gallery exhibit

“Pigment on Cloth: Tradition, Family and the Art of Indian Pichvai Painting” is on exhibit in the Robert Hillestad Textiles Gallery through November 16 in the Human Sciences Building on the University of Nebraska–Lincoln’s East Campus.

Nebraska-produced ‘Anna’ collects top animation prize at festival

The first major festival screening of “Anna” also garnered the film’s first award. Nebraska’s Michael Burton, Kwakiutl Dreher and William Thomas created the animated short, which took three years to complete.

Feathers to fibers project earns environmental trust grant

Yiqi Yang’s ongoing research into converting poultry feathers and waste garments into commercially viable textiles has received grant support from the Nebraska Environmental Trust.

The University of Nebraska–Lincoln professor and his research team are focused on developing a product made from keratin fibers found in feathers and protein fibers in wool. Textiles made from these protein fibers have unparalleled performance properties, including moisture transmission, thermal insulation, soft hand and luster.

Mari Sandoz exhibit on East Campus through Sept. 7

An exhibition of historical clothing and other personal items once owned by Nebraska author Mari Sandoz is available for viewing through Sept. 7 on the second floor of the Human Sciences Building on East Campus at the University of Nebraska–Lincoln. “Mari Sandoz: Crafting a Nebraskan Character” is hosted by the Department of Textiles, Merchandising & Fashion Design in the College of Education and Human Sciences and is a partnership between the students of the TMFD graduate seminar, “Museums: Theory and Practice,” and the Mari Sandoz Heritage Society.

Zimbroff receives Fulbright Scholar Award to Brazil

Andrew Zimbroff, assistant professor and extension specialist in the Department of Textiles, Merchandising & Fashion Design, has been selected for a Fulbright Scholar Award to Escola Superior de Agricultura Luiz de Queiroz (ESALQ) in Piracicaba, São Paulo, Brazil from Sept. 1-Dec. 31. During his time at ESALQ, a unit of the University of San Paulo, Zimbroff will be teaching, researching and promoting innovative agribusiness entrepreneurship.

Crafting Culture project connecting immigrants and Nebraskans

"Crafting Culture in the Middle of Everywhere” is a new workshop series and research project coordinated by the Department of Textiles, Merchandising & Fashion Design in the College of Education and Human Sciences.  The project fosters cross-cultural exchange and social connections between immigrant communities and long-term residents of Nebraska.

TMFD student Kang earns LQG scholarship

Younhee Kang, a doctoral student in Textiles, Merchandising & Fashion Design, is the recipient of a $1,000 scholarship from the Lincoln Quilters Guild. Kang’s proposed doctoral research project will focus on quilted armor of East Asia, especially South Korea. She will research cotton armor dating from 4th and 5th century paintings and military uniforms from the 17th and 18th century that display the technique. Kang plans to learn and reproduce the traditional quilting technique, Noo-bi.
