Since its founding in 2004, the Nebraska Center for Research on Children, Youth, Families and Schools has been dedicated to making positive difference in people’s lives through research in the social, behavioral and educational sciences.
To mark its 20-year anniversary, CYFS has released a special edition of its annual report. The report for the 2023-24 fiscal year provides a look at the center’s growing interdisciplinary community and the variety of life-changing research conducted in partnership with CYFS — not only in Nebraska, but throughout the world.
Stories featured in the report highlight recent projects exploring special education teacher shortages, reading support for young students, parent-teacher relationships, diversity and inclusion, cutting-edge technologies that improve quality of life, and more.
The report also shares key impacts and milestones from the past two decades, as well as significant research programs with a proven track record of improving outcomes for participants.

Looking ahead to the next 20 years and beyond, the center’s faculty, staff and students will continue to focus on building strong partnerships in research, practice and policy, while working to find solutions to complex societal challenges. Importantly, these solutions must be relevant, accessible and sustainable for the communities that need them most.
Sheridan said she is excited about the center’s next chapter.
“As we celebrate these 20 years of meaningful, collaborative research, we also eagerly look forward to the next 20 years and beyond,” she said. “Looking ahead, this strong, collaborative community we have fostered will continue to be a driving force as we focus on solving big problems, sparking new ideas and bringing people together as a hub for Nebraska’s researchers, practitioners and policymakers.”
