Mel Sedlacek, office associate in the Department of Child, Youth and Family Studies, was selected as the recipient of the most recent Staff Star Award presented by the College of Education and Human Sciences Staff Council.

“When a staff member retired, Mel eagerly stepped up as campus coordinator for both undergraduate and graduate IDEA online programs, proactively asking how she could help fill any gaps,” her nominator wrote. “Always ready to take on new tasks, she also assists with last-minute event setup and other departmental needs.”

Sedlacek joined the department in July 2023 and initially served as the campus coordinator for the undergraduate Innovative Digital Education Alliance (IDEA) online program, a consortium of universities across the United States that offers online, flexible degree and certificate programs across a range of subjects in human sciences and agriculture. She expanded her role after the retirement of another staff member to oversee both undergraduate and graduate IDEA programs, ensuring smooth communication and registration for more than 100 IDEA students each semester. Sedlacek also manages graduate applications, assists with curriculum and program changes, and coordinates course scheduling.

Using her passion for data organization, Sedlacek has developed tools to track student progress and streamline processes that were previously unmonitored. She has presented AI and Excel workshops and trainings for faculty, staff and students in the department. Her AI expertise has also been recognized at the university level, where she is actively working to create a Bridge Training program for all UNL employees.

Additionally, she has been an engaged staff member both within CEHS and across campus. Sedlacek joined the CEHS Staff Council within a few months of arriving on campus and has introduced new events, led technology workshops, and is currently serving as treasurer. She is an active member of the University of Nebraska Office Professionals Association (UNOPA), served on the IANR Staff Council, and was recently elected to the university Staff Senate.

Beyond her formal role, Sedlacek has fostered a sense of community in CYAF by starting a monthly faculty and staff book club with about 10 members, helping bridge gaps between faculty and staff.
