Graduate design major Lindsay Ducey wins national award

Congratulations to TMFD graduate design major Lindsay Ducey on the 4th place award in the 2012 Design-a-Throw Competion sponsored by Monterey Mills of Janesville, WI. This was the first time that TMFD submitted entries for this competition, and we're very pleased that Lindsay received this award and distinction in a national field. Design-A-Throw Competition is a nationwide pattern design competition open to college and university students enrolled in a graphic design, fashion, interior design, textile or any other related field.

TMFD to join National Retail Federation Foundation's University Partners

NRFF Student Association Ambassador Anna Keiser (l.) and Ambassador-elect Shelby Tucker (r.) The Department of Textiles, Merchandising & Fashion Design is in the process of becoming a National Retail Federation Foundation University Partner, and the TMFD faculty have chosen Anna Keiser as TMFD's first NRFF Student Association Ambassador. Anna's concentration is Merchandising, and she will be a Senior in the 2013 – 14 academic year, during which time she'll represent TMFD to the NRFF and vice versa. Congratulations Anna!

Woven art of Indonesia: Makers, meaning, and significance

This exhibit is rich in textiles, images, and motifs directly related to the intersection of the millennium-old tradition of textile weaving and the impact of outside forces bringing change to this culture.

Printed Impresssions: Source and Speculation: An exhibit at the Robert Hillestad Textiles Gallery

The Robert Hillestad Textiles Gallery presents a new exhibit, Printed Impressions: Source and Speculation. The exhibit will be open January 28 to March 1.

Printed garments from the historic costume collection inspired students in textile design courses to create repeat designs using digital and hand screen printing.

This exhibition was developed in cooperation with Barbara Trout, curator of the historic costume collection, Michael Burton, who worked with students from an advanced design class, and Wendy Weiss who worked with textile students.

Valentine talks Project Runway via Skype

CEHS' own Amanda Valentine was interviewed recently about her experiences on the hit Lifetime show, Project Runway. Amanda is a graduate of Textiles, Merchandising and Fashion Design program.

Valentine, who lives and works in Nashville, was interviewed using Skype. She answered questions about what it was like to participate on the show, and about her memories of Lincoln and UNL.

Valentine, TMFD alumna, to compete on Project Runway

Amanda Valentine, TMFD alumna, will be a contestant on the next Project Runway, the popular fashion reality show on the Lifetime network.

Amanda now makes Nashville, TN her home, where she is wardrobe stylist and costume designer. She works on a wide range of projects--from music videos to commercials and photo shoots.

Her first job was in a pizza shop, but she knew early that she was meant to work in the design world.

Zhao, Cai, and Xu awarded AATCC research grants

Three textile science graduate students in the Department of Textiles, Merchandising and Fashion Design have won three of five student research awards in the national competition of the American Association of Textile Chemists and Colorists' Student Research Support Grants.

The students, mentored by Professors Yiqi Yang and Narendra Reddy, are: Shaobo Cai, AATCC Foundation Student Research Support Grant winner; Helan Xu, AATCC Foundation Student Research Support Grant winner; Yi Zhao, AATCC Foundation Student Research Support Grant winner.

TMFD graduate students awarded 2012 Skala Fellowships

TCD Textile Science graduate students Yi Zhao, Shaobo Cai and Helan Xu were among recipients of Agricultural Research Division 2012 awards and fellowships. officially recognized on Tuesday October 30 at the annual Fellowship luncheon in East Campus Union. Zhou, Cai and Xu are recipients of the 2012-2013 John & Louise Skala Fellowships, recognizing outstanding performance as graduate students who are engaged in research for new industrial uses of agricultural products. The award comes with a $5000 stipend applied to the students’ assistantships.

Parallel Circuits, an exhibition at the Robert Hillestad Textiles Gallery

Parallel Circuits, an exhibition running from December 10 to January 18, 2013, at the Robert Hillestad Textiles Gallery, evolved from the Department of Textiles, Merchandising and Fashion Design Graduate Seminar course Design Perspectives and Issues. With anemphasis on the evolution of Do It Yourself culture and advancements in technology, students explored the DIY culture examining historical and contemporary texts, including how to instructional magazines, online video tutorials, and personal experimentation.
