CEHS is proud to announce Guy Trainin as winner of the 2012 Donald R. Swanson award. Funded by a generous gift from Donald R. Swanson, this award honors exemplary teaching in the College of Education & Human Sciences and carries a $12,500 cash gift for the recipient.

Trainin's work focuses on translational research and teaching in literacy education. Trainin sees translational research as a means to connect theory and experiments with classroom applications in rigorous and transparent ways, exploring the causal chain in applied settings.

Trainin is also co-founder and a co-director of the Kit and Dick Schmoker Reading Center. The center provides tools and guidance leading to critical literacy in the local community, the state, and the Great Plains Region. Trainin and colleagues use an inclusive model that encompasses school age students, families, and teachers. The center is combines research, teaching, and service. At the heart of the center is the UNL Reading Center, a site used for training pre- and in-service teachers, as well as assisting struggling readers, and conducting pilot research.
