Marian Pegler at My Gym
Marian Pegler, owner of My Gym in Lincoln, Nebraska.

CEHS alum Marian Pegler (‘08, ‘11) has built her career on helping children grow with confidence and joy. Her experiences in the College of Education and Human Sciences and at the Ruth Staples Child Development Lab laid the foundation for her passion to create safe, supportive spaces where children and families can thrive. Now as owner of My Gym Children’s Fitness Center in Lincoln, Nebraska, Marian is carrying forward those lessons and offering programs that encourage movement, play and community while supporting families in Nebraska. We asked Marian to reflect on her CEHS experiences, what she loves most about her work, and how she sees the legacy of RSCDL alive in her business.

Can you share a little about yourself, including your background, time in the CEHS, and what you are up to today?
I graduated in 2008 with a degree in early childhood education from UNL and continued my education with a master’s degree in child development. In April of 2012 I opened My Gym Children’s Fitness Center.

How did you get involved with the Ruth Staples Child Development Lab during your time at CEHS? Any memories, moments or lessons that have stuck with you?
I first got introduced to Ruth Staples during my undergrad program where I participated in several practicums at the center, and then in my final semester I completed my student teaching in the full day program. After graduating I continued my education and became a graduate assistant at the center. A temporary position opened up to be the head teacher and I was able to step in for my last year. The potlucks were always one of my favorite events because they bring everyone together-children, families and teachers. Not only are we sharing food and traditions that are special to each family, but we are also building community and relationships.

As owner of MyGym in Lincoln, Nebraska, can you tell us more about the space and the programs you offer?
My Gym Children’s Fitness Center is a place designed to help kids grow through movement, play and fun. It offers structured, age-appropriate classes and activities that build strength, coordination and balance while encouraging confidence, teamwork, and social skills. We not only offer classes, but we have camps when school is not in session, birthday parties and our parents’ night out on Fridays.

What inspired you to open your MyGym location and how have you seen it impact Nebraska children and families?
I opened My Gym because I had a passion for creating a space where children could grow not only physically but also emotionally. My Gym provides families a space where kids can be active and build confidence in a safe and supportive, noncompetitive environment. We love celebrating all the milestones with families from first steps to birthdays and everything in between.

What’s your favorite part of your work at MyGym, and what makes it meaningful for you?
My favorite part of working at My Gym is seeing the joy and confidence that grows in each child. Watching a child try something new—whether it’s climbing, balancing or joining in a group activity—and then light up with pride when they succeed. Knowing I get to be a part of their journey in helping them build not only physical skills but also self-esteem, resilience, and friendships. It’s more than just play—it’s creating a safe and encouraging space where children feel supported to take chances and discover what they are capable of.

As we celebrate 100 years of the Ruth Staples Child Development Lab, what do you think makes it such a special place?
Ruth Staples is a special place because it is more than just a center; it’s a community. The teachers and staff truly care about each child as an individual and they create an environment where kids feel safe, loved and encouraged to explore. Children are given space to learn through play, curiosity and creativity while families are welcomed and partners in the process.

Do you see the legacy of RSCDL reflected in your own work today? In what ways?
Being part of Ruth Staples showed me the power of patience, creativity, and genuine care in helping children grow. I carry those lessons with me—whether it’s remembering the importance of meeting kids where they are, encouraging them to explore, or creating an environment where families feel welcomed and supported.

Why do you think programs like RSCDL and MyGym are so important for Nebraska children and families?
These programs give children and families a safe and supportive place to grow. We are helping to build confidence, develop health habits and learn how to connect with others.

What excites you most about the future of early childhood development in Nebraska?
What excites me most about the future of early childhood development in Nebraska is knowing that more children will have the chance to start their lives with a strong foundation. I love seeing how our communities come together to support families and how much focus there is on making sure kids feel safe, cared for and ready to learn. It gives me hope to think about the next generation growing up with the tools, confidence, and opportunities they need to thrive, not just in school but in life

What advice would you give to students hoping to pursue a career in child development, education, or children’s wellness?
Lead with both heart and patience. These fields require deep compassion, but also the resilience to keep learning and growing right alongside the children you serve. The smallest acts of care and encouragement can have a lifelong impact on a child’s future.
