The College of Education and Human Sciences at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln celebrated awarding more than $2.3 million in scholarships and fellowships to its students at the college’s annual scholarship donor luncheon Nov. 7.
More than 700 students received scholarship or fellowship funding from the college for the 2025-26 academic year, including more than 165 graduate students and nearly 110 first-time freshmen. About 105 donors and students gathered to celebrate the funding at the annual luncheon.
“Since beginning my role in CEHS, I have been astounded by the passion and commitment of our alumni and donors,” CEHS Dean Jeff Reese said. “It is both humbling and inspiring. We are so grateful to those who provide support for our great students.”
Two graduate students in the family and consumer sciences education program provided remarks at the event, speaking of their appreciation for the funding support as they pursue master’s degrees while balancing teaching, families and health and other challenges.
Kathleen Lodl, associate dean of Nebraska Extension, also spoke of the impact of Gwendolyn Newkirk, a longtime faculty member and administrator. Newkirk, a trailblazer in the profession of home economics education, is believed to have been the first faculty member of color when she became chair of the Department of Home Economics Education in the College of Home Economics in 1971.
