A retirement reception honoring John Maag, Larry and Sharon Roos Professor in Special Education, is 4:30-7 p.m. May 14 at Tanner’s Bar and Grill, 8600 S 30th St.
Maag is retiring after 37 years in the Department of Special Education and Communication Disorders specializing in the education and treatment of children with emotional and behavioral disorders. Throughout his career at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, Maag has taught courses in behavior management, cognitive therapy, and the use of strategic interventions. A certified professional counselor and licensed mental health practitioner in the state of Nebraska, Maag’s research interests include functional assessment, treatment of depression and teaching self-management skills.
He has received the Family and Friends Recognition Award from the UNL Parent and Family Association eight times in his career. Maag was also selected as the recipient of the Donald R. And Mary Lee Swanson Award for Teaching Excellence in 2014, the highest teaching honor awarded by the College of Education and Human Sciences. He has published more than 140 journal articles and book chapters, as well as authoring several books.
Maag earned his bachelor’s, master’s and doctoral degrees in special education from Arizona State University. He spent one year as an assistant professor in special education at the University of Maryland before arriving at Nebraska in 1989. He was promoted to associate professor in 1994 and became a full professor in 2000.
