Pospishil, HRTM student, selected for internship at 2014 Cannes International Film Festival

Stevie Pospishil, a Hospitality, Restaurant and Tourism Management (HRTM) major has been selected to be a student intern at the 2014 Cannes International Film Festival in Cannes, France this coming May 11-26.

The program provides experience to students interested in film, culinary arts and hospitality/event management. “The Hospitality/Event Internship at the Cannes is an internship I brought to the HRTM program when I started at UNL four years ago. This was possible because of my network with the American Pavilion,” Gina Fe Causin, Assistant Professor in HRTM, stated.

Causin is invited speaker at Agri/Eco Tourism Conference Feb. 3-5, 2014

Gina Fe Causin, Assistant Professor in Hospitality, Restaurant and Tourism Management, has been invited by the Nebraska Tourism Commission to present two presentations at its February 3-5, 2014 Agri/Eco-Tourism Conference in Kearney, NE.

Causin’s presentations will focus on event planning and planning green events. Attendees will learn how to identify the dimension of an event experience, forecast potential gaps and discrepancies, and understand why events should go green.

Struthers to present next NGN Seminar, Jan. 22

Amy Struthers, associate professor in the Department of Advertising and Public Relations, will present the next Nebraska Gateway to Nutrigenomics Seminar. Struthers’ talk is entitled, “Science and health communication: The application of advertising methods to science and public health outreach.”

Stuthers’ talk will be held Jan. 22 in the Nebraska East Union at 12:00 p.m. This is a brown bag event, with dessert and coffee provided.

CEHS researcher Tim Carr featured BBC Radio 4 documentary, "Fructose: The Bittersweet Sugar."

Fructose has been much maligned by media reports and some research in recent years. Some have blamed the simple sugar for the obesity epidemic that has plagued the United States. Research by Carr, chair of UNL’s Department of Nutrition and Health Sciences, tells a different story.

In the BBC documentary, Carr discusses how the consumption of fructose in America has not changed in the last 40 years and, therefore, is not a unique casual factor in the spread of obesity.

Harrison-Findik to present next NGN Series talk Dec. 4, 12:00 p.m.

D. Dee Harrison-Findik, associate professor, Internal Medicine/GI Section, UNMC, will give the next NGN Series talk. Her talk,  “The regulation of Hepcidin and Iron Metabolism in Alcoholic and Non-alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease,” will be Dec. 4 at noon in the East Campus Union. This brown bag talk is sponsored by Nebraska Gateway to Nutrigenomics, part of the department of Nutrition, Health, and Science.

Harrison-Findik’s research focus is on molecular mechanisms of cellular signalling pathways.

Jha to present on cross-cultural marketing in Dubai Nov. 26

Dipra Jha, assistant professor of practice in Hospitality, Restaurant and Tourism Management has been invited by the Emirates Academy of Hospitality Management to deliver a lecture on cross-cultural marketing in hospitality and tourism. Jha will be traveling to Dubai during Thanksgiving week to deliver his presentation on Nov. 26.

HRTM students attend New York trade show

Nineteen students from the Hospitality, Restaurant and Tourism Management (HRTM) program leave Nov. 7 for a six-day education study tour to New York City. The main purpose of the trip is to attend the 2013 International Hotel, Motel and Restaurant Show (IHMRS) at the Jacob K. Javits Conference Center. The IHMRS is the largest hotel and restaurant tradeshow in the world. More than 750 exhibitors in the hotel and restaurant industry will participate.

HRTM students host Mocktail Masterpiece Nov. 6, 7 p.m.

On Nov. 6 at 7pm in the Union Ballroom, HRTM students will host Mocktail Masterpiece, a night of painting a 12x16 masterpiece, and enjoying mocktails and appetizers. An instructor will walk you through how to make a beautiful painting, or you can create your own! All proceeds go to HRTM student scholarships.

Harris to give next NGN Series talk Nov. 13

Edward Harris, assistant professor of biochemistry, will present a talk titled, “Early Events in Fatty Liver Disease.” The talk will be Nov. 13 at noon in the East Campus Union. This brown bag talk is sponsored by Nebraska Gateway to Nutrigenomics, part of nutrition, health, and science.

Harris’ research focus is on a small family of Stabilin receptors, which are primarily responsible for the clearance of GAGs from both lymphatic and circulatory systems.
