Cheng to be honored as CEHS Alumni Master

28 Mar 2022

Alumnus Michael Cheng (’93, ’95), dean at the Chaplin School of Hospitality and Tourism Management at Florida International University, will return to campus March 30 to April 1 to be recognized as an Alumni Master. The Alumni Master’s Program is sponsored by the Nebraska Alumni Association, the Student Alumni Association, and the UNL Chancellor's Office. During Masters Week, outstanding alumni return to campus to share their experiences and knowledge with students.

Cheng received both his Bachelor of Science degree and Master of Science degree in restaurant/food service management. In his more-than-20-year career of teaching and learning, he has established Culinology™ — the world’s first and only academic discipline that blends culinary arts and food science. Prior to his current role, he was a tenured associate professor and director of the school’s Food and Beverage Program.

Cheng has been honored three times by the Research Chefs Association (RCA) with the President’s Award for continued innovation, dedication, leadership and extraordinary contributions to the RCA community. Cheng is also the editor-in-chief of the Journal of Culinary Science and Technology.

Since 1964, more than 400 alumni have participated in Alumni Masters. The selection of the Alumni Masters is competitive. Candidates are alumni who have shown great promise, success and leadership in their fields. Each spring, a committee of faculty and administrators makes recommendations to the chancellor, who chooses the participants for the program.
