Hospitality minor now open to all students

18 Sep 2019

The Hospitality, Restaurant and Tourism Management (HRTM) program announced on Tuesday, September 17 that the HRTM minor is now open to all University of Nebraska students. Shannon Rowen, HRTM director of academic programs and associate professor of practice, said, “There has been great demand for our hospitality minor to be open to all students within the University of Nebraska system, and we’re glad to be in a position to open the minor at this time.” The HRTM major focuses on six areas of specialization: event management, tourism, food & beverage management, lodging, club management, and human resources management. Students that declare the minor can focus on their areas of interest within the program. Tourism is Nebraska's third largest earner of revenue from outside the state after agriculture and manufacturing, bringing in excess of $4.9 billion annually and supporting 47,449 jobs. According to the World Travel and Tourism Council, the industry has been responsible for one in five of all new jobs created worldwide. The HRTM program resides in two colleges, the College of Agricultural Sciences and Natural Resources and the College of Education and Human Sciences. HRTM has recently been in the news with the announcement of a teaching hotel at Nebraska Innovation Campus, the first Hospitality Student Summit, and the Stevens Initiative Grant for Collaborative Online Integrated Learning (COIL).
