CEHS students crowned royalty

Congratulations to CEHS seniors Shelby Kruse, a nutrition science major, and Jeffrey Story, a political science and English major with a minor in education. Kruse and Story were coronated as homecoming king and queen Saturday, Sept. 27 during halftime of the Nebraska-Illinois game.

Kruse is president of her sorority, Gamma Phi Beta, and staff adviser for the Nebraska Human Resources Institute. Her parents are John and Stephannie Kruse of Lincoln.

HearU Nebraska receives grant from Women Investing in Nebraska

Many children in Nebraska who are born with or develop hearing loss are likely to receive the life changing gift of hearing thanks to a grant awarded to HearU Nebraska from Women Investing in Nebraska.

HearU Nebraska, a statewide program of the University of Nebraska–Lincoln College of Education and Human Sciences, was awarded $75,950 from Women Investing in Nebraska to help provide hearing aids for babies and children with hearing loss and help with cochlear implants for children whose parents’ insurance doesn’t cover the equipment.

Dr. Ray Awarded Funds for Children's Hearing Aids

Stacie Ray was awarded $75,950 from Women Investing in Nebraska for her proposal to give the gift of hearing through HearU Nebraska.  Stacie’s proposal was selected after site visits were completed for nine finalists.  The funds will be used to secure amplification devices for 30+ hearing impaired children (birth to age 18) in the state of Nebraska.  HearU Nebraska’s mission is to provide hearing aids to children ages 0 to 18 with priority to newly identified children from 0 to 3 years of age.

Su Presents at 11th Chinese Biochemistry and Molecular Biology Conference in China.

Dr. Qiaozhu Su, an assistant professor in the Department of Nutrition and Health Sciences at UNL was invited by the Chinese Society of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology to present her research work at the 11th Chinese Biochemistry and Molecular Biology Scientific Conference held on August 21-23, 2014, Xiamen, China.

Teaching for social justice workshop Oct. 4

A full day of learning on racial literacy and teaching for social justice is being hosted by the secondary English education program in Teaching, Learning and Teacher Education (TLTE) from 8:30 a.m.-4 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 4. Teaching for Social Justice: Enhancing Communication, Improving  School Climate will be held at 105 Teachers College Hall.

The workshop is being supported by TLTE's University-wide Departmental Teaching Award, the Canary Fund and the Malaika Foundation. It is designed for the following audiences:

Jha presents alternative visitor engagement strategy

Dipra Jha, assistant professor of practice in Hospitality, Restaurant and Tourism Management presented an alternative visitor engagement strategy at the recent Upper Midwest Convention and Visitors Bureau Conference. This year’s conference was hosted by the Lincoln Convention and Visitors Bureau at the Holiday Inn Downtown, Sept. 14-16. It attracted leaders, professionals and tourism industry partners like Tripadvisor from around the United States. The conference rotates annually among cities in the Upper Midwest and is an important event for tourism professionals in the region.

Homecoming tailgate Sept. 27, 5-7 p.m.

Faculty and staff are welcome to the CEHS Alimni Tailgate with great food and great music at no charge Sept. 27, 5-7 p.m. As part of the festivities Roger Breed, former Nebraska Commissioner of Education, will be honored as the 2014 CEHS Distinguished Alum.

The Tailgate will be held in the Jackie Gaughan Multicultural Center (just east of the city campus Union). Tickets are available on a first-come basis with space for approximately 20 people.
