Q. Wang - IANR Global Engagement Program Summer Exchange Student Participant.

Qiwei Wang, a sophomore at Northwest Ag & Forestry University, spent July 11 to August 9, 2013, in the laboratory of Dr. Janos Zempleni. Qiwei participated in the 2013 Research Summer Exchange program sponsored by the Institute of Agricultural and Natural Resources’ Global Engagement office. During her stay, Qiwei participated in a research project that addresses the effects of posttranslational modification of enolase-1 on glycolytic activity in humans.

New Books on Vitamins Published by Taylor and Francis with Contributions from NGN Director

The NGN Director, Dr. Janos Zempleni, has edited the new edition of the prestigious Handbook of Vitamins. This leading text on vitamin biochemistry and nutrition is now in its fifth edition, and names Drs. John W. Suttie (University of Wisconsin at Madison), Jesse F. Gregory III (University of Florida, Gainesville), and Patrick J. Stover (Cornell University, Ithaca) as co-editors. Dr. Justin Mott Served as Co-moderator – AGA-DDW National Meeting

Dr. Justin Mott, UNMC Dept. of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, was selected as a co-moderator for the session, “Basic Mechanisms of Hepatotoxicity and Fibrosis,” at the 2013 national meeting for the American Gastroenterological Association: Digestive Disease Week held May 18-21, 2013, in Orlando, FL. Digestive Disease Week is billed as the world’s largest gathering of physicians and researchers in the fields of gastroenterology, hepatology, endoscopy and gastrointestinal surgery.

Coutts researching distance technology delivery of intervention to rural communities

Miles or megabytes? Speed limits or bandwidth? Country roads or fiber optics?
For years, reaching out to families and schools in rural communities has meant long hours of costly travel. This reality has made distance technology an appealing alternative – and the focus of Michael Coutts, a CYFS doctoral student affiliate.

Coutts grasped the significant investments involved in supporting rural communities while contributing to several studies of Conjoint Behavioral Consultation, a family-school partnership approach co-developed by CYFS director Susan Sheridan.

Kids with emotional and behavioral disorders are more likely to miss school, fail classes and drop out than any other group of students with disabilities. With support from a $3.2 million grant, UNL researchers are evaluating a unique new program that uses parent-to-parent support to encourage families to get the help they need to keep kids in school.

CEHS Tech EDGE conference unites technology and learning and educators

Tech EDGE 8 will be held from 10:00 a.m.-4:00 p.m., Tuesday, Aug. 20 at Henzlik Hall on the University of Nebraska­–Lincoln City Campus. The conference is for university instructors who are interested in learning new ways to use technology in the classroom, to improve instructional practice, and to expose students to 21st century learning tools.

Portnoy helps double number of credentialed psychology supervisors in China

A program led by Bob Portnoy is on course to double the number of credentialed psychology supervisors in China within two years.

Portnoy, director of counseling and psychological services at the University Health Center, developed the project as a Fulbright scholar based at China’s Nanjing University in 2011-12.

African art gala and auction funds CEHS scholarships for education abroad

The College of Education and Human Sciences at the University of Nebraska–Lincoln and the Malaika Foundation are hosting a Gala Celebration of African Art, Cuisine and Fashion from 6-9 p.m., Friday, Sept. 27, 2013 at Quilt House, home of the International Quilt Study Center and Museum, 1523 N. 33rd St. in Lincoln. The gala will raise funds for scholarships to support education abroad experiences for students in CEHS.
