Tatum Morris (‘22), an alumna of the Hospitality, Restaurant and Tourism Management program, recently finished participating in the 2024-25 cohort of the Nebraska Alumni Association’s Young Alumni Academy (YAA). From candle making to campus insights, Tatum shares how YAA helped her reconnect with campus, meet fellow alums, and find new ways to give back. Read about her favorite moments and why she recommends the experience to fellow young CEHS alumni.

Looking back at your time in the college, what did you study and what inspired you to choose that path?
I was a student at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln from 2018-2022 and received my undergraduate degree in Hospitality, Restaurant & Tourism Management, with minors in Leadership & Communication and Business Administration. I knew from a young age that I wanted to go into a field involving hospitality, specifically event planning. This was the perfect major for me and I enjoyed being a part of CEHS.

What interested you in applying for the Young Alumni Academy?
I was interested in applying for the Young Alumni Academy because I wanted to connect with the University in a new way. Currently and since graduating, I have been employed at the University of Nebraska Foundation.

Which academy session was your favorite and why?
My favorite academy session was the candle making. It was a great opportunity to connect further with the Academy members and hear from the owner of Wax Buffalo about how her journey to the business was out of the ordinary.

Was there a behind-the-scenes moment or university update that really surprised or inspired you?
I thoroughly enjoyed the presentation from Tyler Kai regarding Husker Athletics. Hearing about the different levels of giving and what that provides the donors, as well as how Husker Athletics is including younger generations.

What kind of connections or friendships did you build through the Academy? Any collaborations or ongoing relationships that have come from it?
From YAA I gained a better relationship with two coworkers that were also in the program. I had known of both of them but didn’t have any opportunities to work with them. This experience helped form a relationship with them outside of work that will then help our working relationship.

How did the Academy help you reconnect or deepen your relationship with the university?
The Academy helped create a wide range of appreciation for various areas of the university as well as provide more context for my daily work. It was great to hear about what has been done, and will be done, to make the University strong for generations to come.

How do you see the role of young alumni shaping the future of UNL?
The role of a young alum is investing in the next generation. Most of the participants had individuals in their life who were not fortunate enough to go to UNL and are now involving them and getting them to invest. Keeping alumni involved and staying updated will pass along the good work of the University to future generations.

What’s next for you—and how do you hope to continue staying connected with CEHS and the Husker alumni community?
It has made me want to get involved on campus in various ways. I am now open to more opportunities to volunteer than I was before.

What would you say to other young College of Education alumni who are considering applying for the Young Alumni Academy?
Do it! It was relatively low commitment and provided opportunity to be back on campus if you haven’t already. I would also recommend doing it with a friend!

The Young Alumni Academy offers an in-person experience dedicated to enhancing the connection and engagement of young alumni with the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. While the recommended age range for participants is 25 to 40 years old, all are welcome to apply. The 2025-26 cohort will begin accepting applications on July 7 and close August 15.
