My Beautiful Stutter

The Department of Special Education and Communication Disorders is hosting a free virtual screening of the award-winning documentary film, “My Beautiful Stutter”, Saturday, Jan. 16, 2021.

The event runs from 3-5 p.m., and will include a short Q-and-A with the film’s director, Ryan Gielen, following the screening. The screening is open to anyone, but the minimum recommended age for the film is 12 years old. Visit go.unl.edu/my-beautiful-stutter by Jan. 15 to register for the event. The Zoom link will be distributed to all registered attendees.

From executive producers Paul Rudd and George Springer, “My Beautiful Stutter” follows five young people ages 9 to 18 from across the United States who, after experiencing a lifetime of bullying and stigmatization, meet other children who stutter at an interactive arts-based program, The Stuttering Association for the Young (SAY), based in New York City. Their journeys to SAY find some close to suicide, others withdrawn and fearful, exhausted and defeated from failed fluency training, societal pressures to not stutter or the decision to remain silent. Over the course of a year, the documentary witnesses the transformation that occurs when these young people of wildly different backgrounds experience for the first time the revolutionary idea at the heart of SAY: it’s OK to stutter.
