Melisia Bieber honored with CEHS Staff Star Award

28 Mar 2022

Melisia Bieber, office associate in the Department of Textiles, Merchandising and Fashion Design, has been named the recipient of the latest Staff Star Award by the College of Education and Human Sciences Staff Council.

In her role, Bieber is often the first point of contact for students and faculty in need of assistance. She is knowledgeable on many policies and procedures and always ensures the department stays on track with processing information, meeting professional needs of faculty and staff, and supporting students. She also serves on multiple, student-centric committees within the department, including the recruitment and retention committee, undergraduate curriculum committee and website committee.

“Melisia always puts our students first, and she is always extraordinarily helpful to support other staff and faculty to improve the academic and work lives of everyone in the department,” said one nominator.

Bieber led TMFD’s efforts in hosting an open house for educators from public schools as part of a student recruitment initiative. She planned the event under time constraints and amidst pandemic-related challenges, ensuring that all faculty were involved, and a wide variety of the department’s work was highlighted. The event was well-attended and received positive feedback from attendees. She also held key roles during TMFD’s Professional Advisory Council event, and the department’s involvement in East Campus Discovery Days.

Another project Bieber spearheaded was updating the display cases on the second floor of the Human Sciences Building. These display cases showcase the work of TMFD students and are a point of pride for the department. Bieber coordinated with contractors and builders to update the displays in a timely manner. Faculty, staff and students are encouraged to visit the Human Sciences Building to see the new displays.

“There are many things that we take for granted as simply 'being done' and few of us know how much effort it took because Melisia has taken it upon herself to simply 'take care of things’,” said another nominator.
