Lewis (TLTE) to serve on national committee on preservice science teacher education

CEHS Department of Teaching, Learning, and Teacher Education assistant professor Beth Lewis has been appointed to the National Science Teachers Association's (NSTA) Committee for Preservice Science Teacher Education. Founded in 1944, the NSTA is the largest science teacher association in the world with 55,000 members.

Four graduate students in Educational Administration are attending the 2014 Institute on Social Justice, Nov. 9-11, in Seattle. Joel Orozco-Almeida, Jessica Weed, Lynn Huynh and Kevin Rush are in the second-year cohort of the student affairs master’s degree program.

EDAD students explore social justice at conference

ECNU Students Visit UNL

Students from East China Normal University in Shanghai visited UNL for three weeks. The trip was part of an exchange program between ECNU and UNL.

The students went on tours of schools in Nebraska, including Educare Winnebago, to learn about early childhood development. Highlights of the trip included the Henry Doorly Zoo in Omaha, a rodeo in downtown Lincoln, and shopping at the Nebraska Crossing outlet malls in Gretna.

Nov. 11 Kelley Symposium Addresses Opportunity Gap

A nationally recognized authority on early childhood literacy education, Elfreida "Freddy" Hiebert, will keynote the 2014 Helen Kelley Symposium for Excellence in Education, from 3-5 p.m., Tuesday, Nov. 11 at the University of Nebraska–Lincoln East Campus Union, Great Plains Room. Hiebert will speak about how early childhood educators can design early reading literacy programs to help overcome the influences of poverty in the acquisition of literacy skills. The event is sponsored by the Department of Child, Youth and Family Studies in the College of Education and Human Sciences (CEHS).

Paul Grossman will present two presentations, one on legal rights of disabled students and the other focusing on helping wounded warriors and other veterans on campus. Grossman’s talks are sponsored by the Department of Educational Administration.

SECD doctoral students awarded New Century Scholarships

Austin Oder and Jessie Patterson, both Ph.D. students in the Department of Special Education and Communication Disorders, were awarded New Century Doctoral Scholarships from the American Speech Language Hearing Association. The New Century Scholarship program supports strong doctoral candidates who will pursue a teacher-investigator career in the academic environment at the university/college level. Oder and Patterson will be recognized at the American Speech Language Hearing Association convention in November.
