CEHS grad collaborates with Häagen-Dazs Ice Cream

Christopher Elbow, a 1996 graduate from the Department of Nutrition and Health Sciences, recently announced a collaboration between his specialty chocolate brand and Häagen-Dazs ice cream. Working with culinary professionals from across the country, the ice cream giant created its “Artisan Collection” of six new flavors, including “Spiced Pecan Turtle” from Christopher Elbow Artisanal Chocolates. According to the company’s Facebook page, the flavor is based on a chocolatey treat called Venezuelan Spice Turtles.

Successful ELL Day connects students, future teachers

More than 200 middle school students—all English language learners (ELLs)—spent the day on the UNL campus Thursday, April 23, for UNL’s first ELL Day. The event celebrated the work ELL students have been doing in their classrooms all semester and gave elementary and secondary English education majors at UNL a chance to gain experience working with an underserved student population.

Governor Pete Ricketts recently appointed Stacie Ray, associate professor of practice in Special Education and Communication Disorders, to the board of commissioners for the Nebraska Commission for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing.

TLTE alum Seiboldt selected for Knowles Fellowship

Cassie Seiboldt graduated from Teaching, Learning and Teacher Education last May and has been teaching mathematics to students at Lincoln Northeast High School. Like all TLTE graduates, she was taught that teaching is a profession that requires you to continuously hone your skills and that it's important to seek new and better ways to reach students. In April she was notified that she has been selected for a prestigious Knowles Science Teaching Foundation Fellowship.

Governor Appoints Stacie Ray

Governor Pete Ricketts recently appointed Stacie Ray, Associate Professor of Practice in SECD, to the Board of Commissioners for the Nebraska Commission for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing (NCDHH).  The mission of NCDHH is  to promote and advocate for Nebraskans who are Deaf, Deaf-Blind or Hard of Hearing: to achieve equality and opportunity in social, educational, vocational, and legal aspects impacting their daily lives; and to enhance and monitor access to effective communication and telecommunication technology.

TMFD students get a glimpse of fashion's history in American culture

The Department of Textiles, Merchandising and Fashion Design (TMFD) recently gave students the opportunity to hear an untold side of the story of fashion in America—the tale of the “Dress Doctors,” a group of women in the early 20th century who advised women across the country on how to dress. Dr. Linda Przybyzszewski, Associate Professor in the Department of History at the University of Notre Dame and author of The Lost Art of Dress: The Women Who Once Made America Stylish, visited UNL to discuss her research on the Dress Doctors and speak to classes in TMFD.

Ann Watt Selected for Think With Things Pilot Project

Ann Watt, Master Teacher in the Department of Child, Youth and Family Studies, has been selected as one of 101 participants from 17 countries for a pilot “Think with Things” project.

"Think with Things" is a part of The Open Education Challenge, an annual competition launched in partnership with the European Commission as part of Startup Europe. Education startups present their ideas, and the winning teams receive support in terms of mentoring and seed money through the European Incubator for Innovation in Education.

TLTE to host UNL's first English Language Learner Day

CEHS’s Department of Teaching, Learning and Teacher Education (TLTE) will host UNL’s first English Language Learners (ELLs) Day on Thursday, April 23, 2015. The event will bring more than 200 Lincoln Public Schools middle school ELL students to the UNL campus and will give more than 100 elementary education and secondary English education majors the opportunity to work directly with this underserved population.
