Program builds strong parent, school partnerships

An innovative program to help teachers solve classroom behavior problems also helps parents reduce temper tantrums and disobedience at home, a new study shows.

The experimental program — known as Conjoint Behavior Consultation, or CBC – teams teachers and parents with specially trained consultants who work together to defuse problem behavior and improve school performance.

Distance and Blended Education Spring 2014 Colloquium

CEHS faculty and staff are welcome to attend the Blended and Online Learning Colloquium: Supporting Research-Based Instructional Strategies with Technology, April 14th, Unity Room (212) in the Jackie Gaughan Multicultural Center. This Colloquium will highlight a number of instructional strategies and technologies that can be used in a diverse class environments (i.e., fully online, blended, flipped, and in-person).

Bustamante earns national dissertation support grant

The “Modern Language Journal” and the National Federation of Modern Language Teachers has awarded CEHS doctoral student Carolina Bustamante a national dissertation support grant of $2,500. Bustamante competed with students from across the country. The only other recipient was a student at Georgetown University. The purpose of the grants is to provide resources to graduate students who are in the process of researching or writing their dissertation.

"Complexity," a juried exhibition, opens at Hillstead Gallery Apr. 7-May 9

Complex Weavers announces its biennial international juried exhibition “Complexity”, featuring works employing complex weave structures that interlace threads and fibers in ways beyond plain weave. The opening reception for this touring exhibition, will be Sunday, April 6 from 1:00 to 3:00 p.m. at the Robert Hillestad Textiles Gallery in CEHS, Human Sciences Building . According to the show organizers, “complex weaving is defined by the cloth produced and the mind it took to create it, not by the equipment used.” The exhibit runs from April 7 through May 9, 2014.

Critical Issues Forum explores poverty and education

Poverty’s impact on educational opportunity brings together a diverse lineup of speakers as UNL’s Department of Educational Administration hosts its Critical Issues Forum, 8:30 a.m.-3:30 p.m., Monday, April 21 at Southeast Community College, 8800 O Street in Lincoln. The forum on poverty will attract more than 200 K-12 and higher education administrators, teachers, service providers, graduate and undergraduate students, community leaders, media, educational organizations and others.

"Farm Waste Fashionistas" program highlights CEHS scientist Yiqi Yang

“In the near future, when you reach for your favorite shirt or sweater – textile scientist Yiqi Yang wants you to thank CORN – not cotton – for that soft, comfortable feel.

Corn?  Yup.

Yang thinks part of the world’s most abundant grain may one day rival cotton as the future of textiles.
