Fall Nebraska Lecture: Ready for School, Ready for Life: Creating a Future for All Children

On November 30th, Susan Sheridan, Director of UNL's Center for Research on Children, Youth, Families and Schools, will present the fall Nebraska Lecture, "Ready for School, Ready for Life: Creating a Future for All Children, " at 3:30 p.m. in the Nebraska Union auditorium. The lecture is free, open to the public, and everyone is welcome to attend. Please mark your calendars and encourage colleagues and students to attend.

Intellectual styles in education: Recommendations for learning and instruction

Li-Fang Zhang will speak on the topic of intellectual styles in education November 17, 2010 in Jorgensen 110 on city campus. Zhang's presentation will consider the prudence of adapting instruction to students'  varying intellectual styles.

Zhang is Associate Dean and Associate Professor of Education at the University of Hong Kong, and is recognized as an authority on intellectual styles.

NU Directions garners national recognition for campus alcohol prevention

NU Directions as been recognized as one of 12 “case histories” of effective campus alcohol prevention in Field Experiences in Effective Prevention: The U.S. Department of Education’s Alcohol and Other Drug Prevention Models on College Campuses Grants, published in May 2010 by the U.S. Department of Education, Office of Safe ad Drug-free Schools, Higher Education Center for Alcohol, Drug Abuse, and Violence Prevention.

Panhandle Slim President Jeffrey Hochster Visits TCD

On Friday October 15, 2010, the department welcomed Mr. Jeffrey Hochster, President of Westmoor Mfg Co of Fort Worth, Texas, and the parent company of western wear purveyors Panhandle Slim [http://www.panhandleslim.com/]. Mr. Hochster toured our facilities, met with faculty and students to provide us with an overview of his company's business and market, and met with students to discuss the state of the industry today, the company’s internship and employment opportunities, and the skill sets that Westmoor seeks in interns and prospective employees.

THIS Season Fall '10 now in print!

The fifth edition of the TCD student-produced 'zine THIS Season is now available at various locations around the department and the campuses. Coinciding with New York FASHION WEEK, the publication highlights some of the latest fashion trends as seen in local boutiques including Tsuru, Stella, The Black Market, Anonymous and Blu Velvet, and also features work by TCD grads including Pretty Good Things' creator and TCD visiting lecturer Mary Pattavina.

Governor Heineman Declares October Textiles Month

Governor Dave Heineman has declared October "Textiles Month" in acknowledgment of the choice by the Textile Society of America to hold its biennial symposium here in Lincoln, under the sponsorship of TCD and the College of Education and Human Sciences. Professor Wendy Weiss and Dr. Diane Vigna, co-chairs of the conference, have been working tirelessly over the last two years in planning toward this event.
