Kylee Ellinger is a May 2023 graduate of the University of Nebraska-Lincoln with a degree in elementary education and early childhood education. She currently serves as a kindergarten teacher at Rose Hill Elementary in Omaha. In this Q&A she shares about her experience in the teacher preparation program in the College of Education and Human Sciences.

Why did you choose to attend UNL?

Growing up my family and I were huge Husker fans. When it became time to start considering college plans, I chose to apply to UNL just for fun! Once I got accepted, we booked a trip to visit, and the minute I stepped on campus I fell in love with the environment and knew UNL was the school for me. Plus, my family was pretty excited to attend football games regularly.

What set UNL’s education program apart for you?

One of the many things I loved about UNL’s education program is that you were put in local schools your first year as a college student. By being placed in Lincoln Public Schools, it helped me connect with the community and ensure that I made the right career choice.

If you had a favorite class, what was it and why?

I thoroughly enjoyed all my classes at UNL, but one of my favorites were my placements at the Ruth Staples Child Development Lab. I loved being able to interact with children, build connections with fellow classmates, and learn about the basics of child development.

What aspects of UNL’s program were most helpful in preparing you for your current role?

UNL’s focus on reflection, inclusion, and diversity were the most helpful in preparing me for having my own classroom! The program prepared me for the good and bad of education. I was fortunate enough to step into my Cooperating Teacher’s role during student teaching which made for a seamless transition.

Why did you want to be a teacher?

Since I was little, I have dreamt of being a teacher. My parents would set up the basement of my childhood home to be a classroom and I would “go to school” during weekends. I was very blessed to have many positive teachers and experiences through my education. I wanted to become a teacher to make a positive impact on children’s lives through relationships, positive reinforcement, and engaging learning.

What advice do you have for a student considering elementary and early childhood education as their major?

It’s worth it! My advice to individuals considering education is to have a love for teaching, learning, and connecting with others. The education field needs dedicated individuals who want to make a difference and being able to experience the growth a student can make is magical.

What does it mean to you to be a Husker alum?

I am proud to say that I am a Husker graduate! The community that I have made through UNL is indescribable and I love having that Husker connection with others around the world. Go Big Red!
