The College of Education and Human Sciences Office of Global Exchanges has prepared a “Year in Review” report that details the global engagement of the college during 2020. The report highlights innovative approaches faculty, staff, and students implemented to maintain and enhance global activities in the midst of a pandemic.
“Instead of withdrawing or pulling away from the world stage, CEHS community members pressed ahead with their global connections and collaborations, switching to online formats or in some cases, changing their plans,” Jim Benes, CEHS global exchange coordinator, wrote in an opening message of the year in review.
Included in the report is a celebration of three CEHS students awarded the Gilman International Scholarship, which aims to help students develop skills that strengthen national security and economic competitiveness. Isabella Martello, April Post and Erin Stocking were awarded the Gilman for the Ethiopia/Zambia program led by Mary Willis, professor in the Department of Nutrition and Health Sciences . In total, six Huskers were awarded a Gilman for this program, which is the largest number of Gilmans ever awarded for a faculty-led program at the university.
Also in 2020, Cody Hollist, associate professor in the Department of Child, Youth and Family Studies was granted a Fulbright award to research and develop interventions to decrease suicide and self-harm rates in Brazil. Holist was one of just two faculty members at the university to be awarded a Fulbright for international teaching and research in 2020. Nine students at the university were chosen as Fulbright recipients for the 2020-21 academic year, including two from CEHS. While Taylor Baldwin and Rachel Lux were unable to go on their programs due to COVID-19, their achievements are celebrated.
