Maria de Guzman has been named chair of the Department of Textiles, Merchandising and Fashion Design in the College of Education and Human Sciences at the University of Nebraska–Lincoln. She will assume the position on July 1.
“Maria brings a wealth of interdisciplinary knowledge, and community insight to the department,” said Sherri Jones, dean of the College of Education and Human Sciences . “I am confident that her experience, paired with the passion of TMFD’s faculty, staff and students will lead the department’s programs toward a bright future.”
De Guzman was recently promoted to full professor, effective July 1. She also serves as an adolescent development extension specialist in the Department of Child, Youth and Family Studies . In this role she holds both research and extension responsibilities.
“TMFD is a dynamic department that embodies the three primary missions of UNL, namely teaching, research, and service/extension,” de Guzman said. “The innovative and impactful work done by faculty and students in TMFD has tremendous reach and impact at the university, the state and beyond. I am truly honored and humbled to serve as chair of this department.”
De Guzman’s work focuses on issues around the intersections of culture, migration, family life, and child and adolescent development. Her research has covered these issues among children, youth and families in Poland, Kenya, Mexico, Brazil, Turkey, the United States and the Philippines. Through Nebraska Extension, de Guzman works directly in the community to conduct research-based programming, develop educational materials and disseminate information that can support health and wellbeing among underserved youth and families.
De Guzman earned a bachelor’s degree in psychology from Ateneo de Manilla University. She earned her master’s and doctoral degrees in developmental psychology from Nebraska.
