Meet Sydney Spanel, a senior from Elkhorn, Nebraska, who is majoring in elementary education with a minor in Educational Psychology .

Why did you choose the University of Nebraska-Lincoln?

I chose the University of Nebraska-Lincoln because of its incredible opportunities, affordability, and prime location. Lincoln felt like home ever since I stepped foot on this campus. Even though I am from Omaha, UNL felt far enough from home but still close as well. I knew the education program here to be phenomenal. After I was accepted into the Teacher Scholars Academy, I knew my cohort supporting me would be the best way to experience college.

What activities and organizations are you involved in on campus?

New Student Enrollment Orientation Leader, Delta Gamma Sorority, Teacher Scholars Academy, Teammates Mentoring, Omicron Kappa Delta, Newman Center

What has been your favorite class so far and why?

My favorite class was positive psychology. We learned about goal setting and how to have a positive mentality through difficult situations. I loved my professor and the applicability of the class to any life.

What are your career goals?

I aspire to be an elementary education teacher in the intermediate grades. This summer after graduation, I am pursuing my master's degree in STEM education through the CADRE program at UNO. I aspire to work with gifted students in STEM education and further develop their passions, potentially as a HALE teacher or administrator.
