Section 1 - Clinical Education Dress Code

It is important that all Athletic Training Students (ATS) are easily identifiable and professional looking at all times. ATS will be provided several clothing items to be worn as a uniform during clinical education activities at UNL. The uniform is to be always clean and presentable. As part of the UNL Athletic Training uniform, ATS will be required to wear the UNL Athletic Training Program (UNL ATP) Name Tag during all clinical education activities. ATS will be responsible for purchasing replacement name tags. (See Anticipated Program Costs for current replacement name tag prices.) If the ATS is not wearing the proper uniform nor following the dress code for their specific clinical education site, the ATS will be asked to leave and may return after changing into the proper attire for the assigned clinical education site.

Clinical education sites not affiliated directly with the University of Nebraska-Lincoln may request a different dress code to be followed by the ATS. If a separate dress code is requested by a clinical education site, options for an appropriate uniform must be made available to the ATS for the duration at that specific clinical education site. If a separate dress code is not requested, the ATS will follow the dress code as requested by UNL clinical education sites. ATS will be required to wear the UNL ATP Name Tag at all clinical education sites when participating in clinical education activities.

The ATS must also abide by the following rules while attending all clinical education activities:

  1. Appropriate display of the UNL ATP Name Tag on the UNL ATP uniform at all clinical education activities.
  2. Blue jeans, tights (i.e., yoga pants), or cycling shorts are not permitted.
  3. Shorts with pockets, professional sweats, and t-shirts are acceptable for preprofessional students only. These are not permitted for regular status athletic training students.
  4. Absolutely no tank tops, low necklines, advertisements for alcohol or tobacco, fraternity or sorority letters, logos from other colleges/universities, or athletic brands other than Adidas (i.e., Nike, Under Armour) are permitted on clothing at assigned clinical education sites.
  5. No hats are to be worn indoors.
  6. When traveling, the athletic training students should adhere to the team dress codes.
  7. Athletic training issued clothing is to be worn for athletic department business only.
  8. No open-toe shoes (i.e., flip flops) are to be worn in any clinical education site. Flat soled, athletic type shoes are required.
  9. Shorts and skirts must pass the Hanging Arm Test -let arms hang at the side of the body; the hem of the shorts or skirt should be lower than the fingertips. If the shorts or skirt do not pass this test, they should not be worn to clinical education activities.
  10. Shirt tails must be tucked in at all times. If a student's shirt is too short to tuck in, the student must change into a different shirt that may be properly tucked. All underwear, including bra straps, should be completely covered by the outer clothing.
  11. No facial or oral piercings of any type are permitted. Pierced ear lobes are acceptable, but only stud earrings are to be worn. Any body piercings should be completely covered and not noticeable.
