Pedersen honored by CASNR and NATS

Congratulations to Jon Pedersen, CEHS associate dean for research, for two awards he earned recently. The Nebraska Association of Teachers of Science recognized him with their Catalyst Award at the group’s fall conference Sept. 27 at Camp Calvin Crest near Fremont, NE. Pedersen, a former science teacher at Lincoln Southeast High School and past president of NATS, has been a longtime member of the group. The Catalyst Award recognizes “contributions to science education in Nebraska.”

Thompson to present NGN Series talk October 30 at noon

Henry Thompson, Professor and Director of the Cancer Prevention Laboratory, Colorado State University, will present a talk titled, “The Importance of Common Bean in Human Health: Building the Case for Increased Emphasis in Dietary Guidance.” The talk will be October 30 at noon in the East Campus Union. This brown bag talk is sponsored by Nebraska Gateway to Nutrigenomics, part of nutrition, health, and science.

Miss Representation, a documentary film by Jennifer Siebel Newsom

This documentary, co-sponsored by the department of Teaching, Learning, and Teacher Education, explores how the media's often disparaging portrayals of women contribute to the under-representation of females in positions of power, creating another generation of women defined by beauty and sexuality, and not by their capacity as leaders.

The documentary will be shown Oct. 10, 7:00 p.m. in the Nebraska Union City Campus, room 200. A panel discussion will follow the film screening.

Hillestad Textiles Gallery presents Celebration of Youth XX: Exuberance, Twentieth Anniversary Exhib

Nebraska youth, from nine to nineteen years of age, will have their work showcased in the 20th annual Celebration of Youth: Exuberance, beginning September 30 and running through Oct. 25, 2013.  Items were selected from the thousands of exhibits in the Clothing, Fashion Show, Home Environment and Quilt Quest departments at the 2013 Nebraska State Fair in Grand Island and range from stunning pieced quilts to an inventive Velociraptor costume made of foam, fabric, and sculpted clay.

Ramer-Tait to present talk on efficacy of botantical supplements as part of the NGN Seminar Oct. 16

Amanda Ramer-Tait, assistant professor Food Science and Technology at UNL, will present a talk Oct. 16 entitled " Efficacy of Botanical Supplements in Experimental Animal Models of Inflammatory Bowel Disease." Her talk will be held over the noon hour as part or the NGN Seminar Series at the Nebraska East Union.

"Viewing English Education Through a Globalized Lens" workshop Sept. 28

An internationally diverse panel of speakers highlights the workshop “Viewing English Education through a Globalized Lens,” from 8:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m., Saturday, Sept. 28, 2013 at Teachers College Hall, 14th and Vine streets, at the University of Nebraska–Lincoln. The workshop will be attended by more than 70 pre-service and in-service English educators and other educators from varied fields. The workshop is presented by the Department of Teaching, Learning and Teacher Education in the College of Education and Human Sciences.

Davis to Present NGN Seminar Sept. 18

John Davis, UNMC/VA Medical Center, will present a talk entitled “Ovarian Lipid Droplets: Strategic Centers Controlling Steroidogenesis,” at noon on Sept. 18 at the Nebraska East Union.

Davis' research interests include understanding the mechanisms of action of hormones and other factors that control the function and fate of the ovary. All faculty, staff, and students are invited to attend this free, brown bag event.

Geisinger running for president of American Psychology Association

Kurt Geisinger, Director of the Buros Center for Testing and Meierhenry Distinguished University Professor at the University of Nebraska, has announced his candidacy for president of the American Psychological Association. As Director of the Buros Center, Geisinger led efforts to produce volumes such as the Mental Measurement Yearbooks as well as a variety of consulting projects, all aimed at effectively combining science and practice of psychology.
