"Doors Across Time," Weifang Gong, TMFD alumna, M.A. in Textile Design 2014

Exhibition Date: Sept. 15 through Oct. 10, 2014

Inspired by door patterns from China and America, Weifang Gong examines the symbolism of doors in human life.  Integrating traditional printmaking methods with textile dye and discharge processes on cotton and silk organza, she has created a series of panels that depict her story of study and growth using imagery based on door patterns, self-portraiture, and emblems of Chinese and American culture.

Zempleni, NHS, awarded NIH grant

UNL has earned an $11.3 million grant from the National Institutes of Health to establish a research center focused on understanding nutrition and obesity at the molecular level. A five-year grant from NIH’s Center of Biomedical Research Excellence (COBRE) program will support the Nebraska Center for the Prevention of Obesity Diseases through Dietary Molecules, or NPOD. The COBRE program is funded through the Institutional Development Award (IDeA) Program, which supports health-related research and fosters faculty development and research infrastructure.

Enhancing lives and strengthening relationships. These foundations of the College of Education and Human Sciences also embody the spirit of the inaugural CEHS Unity Week. Students, faculty, staff, alumni and friends of the college are welcome to participate in the activities of Unity Week that get started Sept. 4 and conclude on Sept. 9.

Events are designed to engage, empower, enhance and inspire—all within the context of the CEHS community. Join CEHS as we celebrate a new school year, new students and new relationships.

Jha assists Nebraska City’s tourism efforts

Dipra Jha, assistant professor of Practice in Hospitality, Restaurant and Tourism Management is helping Nebraska City, Nebraska in its efforts to increase tourism. Birthplace of Arbor Day, Nebraska City is home to several historic landmarks including the Arbor Lodge State Park. It also hosts the popular Apple Jack Festival every September, attracting visitors from Nebraska as well as out of state. Jha was contacted by Nebraska City Tourism & Commerce, Inc. requesting his expertise in lodging development and tourism-related events.

CYFS article selected 2013 Article of the Year

A peer-reviewed paper from UNL’s Nebraska Center for Research on Children, Youth, Families and Schools has been selected as 2013 Article of the Year by the Journal of School Psychology.

Lead author Susan Sheridan will accept the award from the Society for the Study of School Psychology on Aug. 8 in Washington, D.C., site of the 2014 American Psychological Association Convention.

Friends of the Robert Hillestad Textile Gallery to host their largest textiles sale

Friends of the Robert Hillestad Textile Gallery will host their largest textiles sale Aug. 14, 10:00 a.m.to 4:00 p.m.; Aug. 15, 10:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m.; and Aug. 16, 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. The sale will be held at 1339 N 37th St, Lincoln, NE 68503, which is near East Campus.



Textiles donated for sale include: yarn, fabric, upholstery fabric, designer flatfolds, designer sample books, and magazines (sewing, knitting, quilting books), craft kits, needlepoint kits, latch hook kits, sewing notions, knitting needles, household textiles, international textiles, and much more.
