CEHS faculty expertise featured by NET and AERA

Faculty in CEHS have recently been tapped to share their expertise with a broader audience. NET Radio broadcast a story Jan. 30 about the Nebraska Department of Education’s decision to seek a federal waiver from the No Child Left Behind regulations. Educational Administration Department Chair Brent Cejda spoke with reporter Ben Bohall and was one of the voices used to explain why Nebraska, trailing most other states, is pursuing the waiver. Cejda also weighs in on the efficacy of the nation’s education policy and what the K-12 education community has learned from NCLB.

Seed grants for global study

CEHS is accepting international seed grant applications through Feb. 27, 2015. A limited number of grants ranging from $500 - $6,000 will be awarded to CEHS faculty or staff. Proposals should support coursework that includes international perspectives, research/creative work that includes an international component, or professional development activities and environmental improvements that will promote CEHS’s international goals.

Susan Goodrich Retires After 30 Years

Susan Goodrich, lecturer in the Department of Child, Youth, and Family Studies, will be retiring effective January 31st, 2015.

Susan has over three decades of professional experiences in public and private school classroom teaching, staff development, and consultation. She has taught and supervised elementary education students in TLTE, was a Student Service Center academic advisor. She has been with the University of Nebraska–Lincoln since 1996.

A retirement celebration will be held on Friday, January 23rd from 3-4 PM in 144 Mabel Lee Hall.

CEHS degree programs continue to earn national acclaim

In the span of two months, four degree programs in the College of Education and Human Sciences at the University of Nebraska–Lincoln have been recognized nationally for excellence. Most recently, TheBestSchools.org ranked the Department of Special Education and Communication Disorders’ online master’s degree in special education with an emphasis in early childhood special education as the 7th ranked program nationally.

Bischoff and Xia speak at international conference

Yan Ruth Xia, associate professor in Child, Youth and Family Studies, was featured Jan. 7, 2015 in a question-answer article in india.com’s Daily News Analysis. The article by Preksha Malu discussed the changing structure of the family and the importance of family on the development of children.

CEHS online graduate education program ranked #5

In its annual ranking of online graduate education programs, the College of Education and Human Sciences at the University of Nebraska–Lincoln is ranked fifth nationally by U.S. News and World Report. The ranking is up six spots from last year and applies to master’s in education degree programs.

U.S. News and World Report bases the rankings on several factors such as accreditation, admissions selectivity and academic and career support services. The number five ranking places UNL behind only Penn State (fourth) in the rankings among Big Ten institutions.

Wichman retirement reception Jan. 15

Larry Wichman, CEHS technical support supervisor, is retiring from CEHS and UNL, after 15 years of service. His last day on the job at CEHS will be Jan. 9, 2015, and the college will honor his service and retirement at a reception Thursday, Jan. 15. The program will begin at 2 p.m. CEHS faculty/staff, UNL colleagues, friends and family are invited to attend. Wichman began his UNL service with Information Technology Services and joined CEHS in 2001.

CEHS staff luncheon update

Nearly 60 CEHS staff members enjoyed a pasta buffet lunch catered by Noodles & Company at Quilt House. Staff Star award winners from 2014 were recognized as part of the festivities.

Leigh Esau, co-founder of Foster CARE Closet, spoke about needs of children in foster care in Nebraska and how the Foster CARE Closet program helps foster children and their foster parents receive much needed clothing.

Pedersen collaborates with science educators in Japan

Jon Pedersen, CEHS associate dean of research (pictured on front row, third from left), returned from Japan this week after spending several days in Tokyo meeting with an international group of professors focused on improving the preparation of science teachers. Professors from Finland, France, Japan, the United Kingdom and the United States assembled in Tokyo Dec. 13-15 for an international seminar sponsored by the Society of Japan Science Teaching.
