CEHS shines at 2018 Research Fair

Students from the College of Education and Human Sciences represented the college in outstanding fashion at the 2018 UNL Spring Research Fair April 10 and 11 at the Nebraska Union. The annual event featured more than 250 undergraduate research posters, six undergraduate creative exhibits and more than 150 graduate research posters. More than 400 students participated over the course of the two-day fair.

EDAD’s Hatch-Tocaimaza receives emerging scholar award

Deryl Hatch-Tocaimaza, assistant professor in the Department of Educational Administration, was presented with the Barbara K. Townsend Emerging Scholar Award from the Council for the Study of Community Colleges (CSCC) April 27, 2018 at its annual meeting in Dallas, Texas.

CYAF family financial planning degree top ranked

The family financial planning online master’s degree offered through the Department of Child, Youth and Family Studies and Great Plains IDEA, has been ranked No. 1 nationally by Top Accounting Degrees. The ranking was based in part on student/faculty ratio, average graduate tuition rate, flexible course offerings, affiliation with professional certification, and online student resources such as advising and tech support.

NSF Noyce grant to establish NebraskaSTEM program for rural elementary teachers

Up to 15 rural Nebraska elementary teachers are being sought to participate in the NebraskaSTEM leadership development program that begins this summer at the University of Nebraska–Lincoln. Funded by a National Science Foundation Robert Noyce grant, participants will receive stipends to help pay the tuition and living costs of completing a 14-month master’s degree in elementary education with a specialization in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) education.

Hamann and Mexican colleagues honored by AERA

A binational research team, including University of Nebraska–Lincoln professor Edmund “Ted” Hamann, will be recognized April 16 for its work to identify and transform the conditions of schooling for thousands of transnationally mobile children and youth. Hamann and his colleagues Víctor Zúñiga, professor, Tecnológico de Monterrey (Mexico), and Juan Sánchez García, research director at the Mexican state of Nuevo León’s Institute for Research, Innovation and Postgraduate Education (known as IIIEPE), will be presented with the Henry T.

USDA entrepreneurship grant invests in rural Nebraska

A University of Nebraska–Lincoln project to support youth entrepreneurship in rural communities has received support from the U.S. Department of Agriculture.

The project, which partners high school students with rural business owners, will be led by Surin Kim, assistant professor in Textiles, Merchandising and Fashion Design and a Nebraska Extension entrepreneurship specialist. Kim will serve as principal investigator and research the economic and social underpinnings of rural flight of youth and young adults in Nebraska.

Catalano selected for Swanson Award

The College of Education and Human Sciences has selected Theresa Catalano, associate professor of Teaching, Learning and Teacher Education (TLTE), as the 2018 Donald R. & Mary Lee Swanson Award for Teaching Excellence recipient. Catalano will be formally recognized at an awards luncheon April 6. Funded by a generous gift from Donald R. Swanson, the award honors exemplary teaching in CEHS and carries a $12,500 cash award.

Research builds relationships between schools, Latino families

As April Stortvedt addressed her fifth-grade students in class, a laminated poster behind served as a reminder of four classroom rules.

Be respectful.

Be honest.

Be responsible.

Follow directions the first time.

Stortvedt said University of Nebraska–Lincoln research has helped one of her students better abide by the classroom rules. Through the study, "Teachers and Parents as Partners for Latino Families," Stortvedt collaborated with her student’s parent to improve behavior at home and school.

Huskers head for Masters internships

While PGA professionals compete on the links, 24 University of Nebraska–Lincoln students and assistant professor of practice Shannon Rowen will work behind the scenes during the upcoming Masters Tournament at the famed Augusta National Golf Club.

The Nebraska contingent will represent the university’s hospitality, restaurant and tourism management program. They are part of the nearly 2,000 hospitality professionals who will provide services to participants, members and patrons during the tournament, April 1-8 in Augusta, Georgia.
