Kathy Duhs, program associate for the Kit & Dick Schmoker Reading Center in the College of Education and Human Sciences, has been selected to receive the latest Staff Star Award presented by the CEHS Staff Council.

Last summer, Duhs helped spearhead a new partnership between the Schmoker Reading Center and the special education apprenticeships program in the university’s Department of Special Education and Communication Disorders.

“Kathy singlehandedly recruited 24 children to receive tutoring in reading and math from the apprentice students in addition to the regular tutoring program,” her nominators wrote. “Kathy coordinated and facilitated with the apprentice students, new supervisors, and two new instructors while also supporting SPED 415/415a. She is the reason the apprentice students were able to gain the one-on-one practicum experiences of teaching foundational reading and math skills to students.”

In her role, Duhs develops and manages tutoring schedules, working directly with families to address challenges and find flexible, effective solutions. Her contributions to the Schmoker Reading Center include aspects of daily operations as well as broader outreach efforts, and the customer service she provides to families of children who need tutoring is often recognized with notes, gifts and tokens of appreciation.

“Kathy consistently demonstrates a deep commitment to the mission of the Reading Center, with a clear focus on meeting the needs of both students and families,” her nominators wrote. “She frequently encourages others to consider the family perspective, fostering a culture of empathy and service across the center. Kathy is a leader at the Reading Center, and her presence is integral to its day-to-day success and long-term stability. Her role is not only valued; it is essential to the Reading Center’s continued growth and effectiveness.”

The Staff Star Award recognizes CEHS staff members who go above and beyond their scope of duties. It is given on a quarterly basis, and the next nomination deadline is Jan. 31. To nominate a staff member for a Staff Star Award, click here.
