Hospitality students interning at Masters golf tournament

Billed as “a tradition unlike any other,” the Masters Tournament at Augusta National Golf Club in Augusta, Georgia, will feature a lineup of University of Nebraska–Lincoln students again this year. Interning as hospitality professionals, 15 students and their professor from Nebraska’s Hospitality, Restaurant and Tourism Management (HRTM) program will work with members, patrons and staff at Augusta National for the 2017 Masters Tournament, beginning April 1.

Jha conducts workshop for tourism executives in Thailand

Dipra Jha, assistant professor of practice in Hospitality, Restaurant and Tourism Management, recently traveled to Bangkok, Thailand to conduct a workshop for tourism executives in that country. Jha’s presentation was part of a professional development series called Tourism Management Program for Executives (TME), jointly administered by the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) and the University of the Thai Chamber of Commerce (UTCC) Business School.

Why fresh fruits, veggies may prevent kids from eating better

Contrary to popular belief, the supermarket’s freezer section or the canned goods aisle could be the path for parents who want to improve their children’s diets.

In a new study, University of Nebraska-Lincoln nutrition researchers asked parents of overweight pre-school and elementary school students why their children didn’t eat more vegetables and fruits. They found that a key stumbling block was parents’ belief that fresh, raw and “natural” vegetables and fruits are healthier for their children than canned or frozen produce.

Former FBI agent presents to HRTM students on human trafficking

Human trafficking is probably not something that comes top of mind when thinking about a career in Hospitality, Restaurant and Tourism Management, but HRTM students in Nutrition and Health Sciences will be learning why it should be. Retired FBI special agent Anna Brewer will speak to students at noon Feb. 7 in Room 31 of the Human Sciences Building on East Campus. Space is limited. International Seed Grant proposals due March 6

Through a generous donor grant, CEHS has funds available to enhance instruction and research through attention to international work and issues. Proposals are being solicited from faculty and staff to support coursework that includes international perspectives, research/creative work that includes an international component, or professional development activities and environmental improvements that will promote our international goals.

Proposals must be emailed to Deb Mullen (dmullen1@unl.edu) in a Word document by March 6, 2017.

Study suggests fitness and iron deficiency linked to GPA

Researchers at the University of Nebraska–Lincoln and Pennsylvania State University have found that a student’s fitness level and iron status could be the difference between making an A or a B. In the study based at Penn State, evidence suggested female college students who were fit and had normal iron levels achieved higher GPAs than unfit women who were iron deficient. The difference in grade point average was as much as 0.34—enough to drop or increase a letter grade.

Cramer’s nutritional supplement research published in JAMDA

Joel Cramer, associate professor of nutrition and health sciences, was recently published in JAMDA, the journal of the Society for Post-acute and Long-term Care Medicine (AMDA), for his research with experimental oral nutritional supplements in older adults with mild to moderate sarcopenia. Cramer and his research colleagues partnered with Abbott Nutrition to “determine the intersections between malnutrition and sarcopenia, and to look for new evidence-based care practices to ultimately improve outcomes for vulnerable patients,” Cramer told “Caring for the Ages,” the newspaper of AMDA.

Jha presents at Corvinus Business School in Hungary

Dipra Jha, assistant professor of practice in Hospitality, Restaurant and Tourism Management in the College of Education and Human Sciences, delivered a presentation at the Corvinus Business School in Budapest, Hungary as part of the school’s Science Café public lecture series. The Oct. 24 event was attended by students and faculty from Corvinus, as well as industry professionals.
