Completing Your Degree at UNL
When do I have to finish my degree?
There is no cutoff date to finish your degree. Due to limited course and faculty availability moving forward, students are encouraged to complete EDAD course requirements by Spring 2028 to ensure the smoothest path to graduation. If you anticipate needing additional EDAD courses beyond 2028, please work with your faculty advisor and transition coordinator to discuss options and develop a completion plan.
Can I still get the Big Red Leaders discount?
Yes, you can get this discount if you had previously applied and been awarded this benefit. It can be applied to credits at UNL or UNO.
How often will remaining required courses be offered?
A Degree Completion Pathway has been developed and is publicly available to help students plan their path to graduation. This pathway outlines all courses that will be offered during the teach-out period, including when they are scheduled to be available.
Students should review the Degree Completion Pathway regularly when planning their enrollment. If a course you believe you need to complete your degree is not listed, or if you have questions about your individual plan of study, please contact your transition coordinator as soon as possible. They can review your requirements and help identify the appropriate next steps to ensure you remain on track for degree completion.
Will registration priority be given to students completing the program?
Yes. Students in departments and programs slated for closure will receive registration priority for courses needed to complete their degree requirements. We encourage students to work with their faculty advisor and transition coordinator to ensure they remain on track for graduation.
Who can help me plan my remaining coursework?
Your faculty advisor and transition coordinator can help you plan your remaining coursework. They are best positioned to advise you on course availability, degree requirements, scheduling, and any alternative options available through the teach-out process. Please contact them if you have questions about your path to graduation.
Will the degree name on my transcript or diploma change?
No. If you remain in the EDAD program and complete your degree through the teach-out process, your transcript and diploma will reflect the EDAD degree. You will continue to be considered an EDAD student unless you choose to transfer to a different program or institution.
Advisors and Committees
Do I have to transfer to UNO or UNK if my faculty advisor is there?
Students can graduate from UNL. No one is required to transfer. If your faculty advisor is at another NU campus, then you will need a co-chair from UNL to supervise your IRB and complete UNL graduate studies documents.
Some students have been approached to transfer to UNO based on course and faculty advisor capacity. Students who transfer to UNO will graduate from UNO and receive a UNO degree.
What if my faculty advisor leaves UNL?
If your faculty advisor leaves UNL, you will be assigned a new faculty advisor unless you already have one identified. Work with the transition coordinator to do so. Your new faculty advisor will support your current study.
Your advisor could be a faculty member at UNO or UNK as long as you have a UNL co-chair with full grad faculty status.
Will I have enough committee members?
Yes, committee members can come from different departments or NU campuses. There is flexibility in committee membership, so this is not anticipated to be a barrier to progress or completion. If needed, paperwork can be done to approve faculty not employed at NU. You must have one UNL faculty member with full grad faculty status to serve as chair or co-chair. At least four of the faculty need https://graduate.unl.edu/about/graduate-faculty/ to serve on the committee.
What happens with my IRB?
Students will complete the IRB at the institution where they are a student. If they have a faculty advisor from UNO/UNK while a UNL student, the UNL co-chair will be listed on the UNL IRB as the supervising faculty.
Enrollment at Another Institution
I want to transfer to UNO, do I have to do everything again or start over?
There is support for applying and a fee waiver to transfer to UNO. Students would not need to complete all the essay items. Students will still need to submit transcripts through the transcript service called Parchment.
Students will not need to start their degree over or comply with the unique requirements at UNO. UNO faculty will support students in completing the program of study and requirements agreed upon at UNL. Course substitutions may be required depending on availability.
Onedrive files will also transfer to your UNO account. Contact nusupport@nebraska.edu immediately if you encounter difficulties.
If I don’t transfer but want to take a course at UNL or UNK can I do that?
Yes, you can take a course at another campus if it is listed on your teach out plan or approved by your advisor. Complete the intercampus application each term you want to take a course at UNO or UNK and once approved, you will receive a link to register. If the course is not on your teach out plan, have your advisor update graduate studies with the substitute course so that at graduation time the course is applied to your program.
