Kristy Weissling, a professor of practice in the University of Nebraska-Lincoln’s Department of Special Education and Communication Disorders , was selected as the recipient of the Recognition of Service Award from the Nebraska Speech-Language-Hearing Association (NSLHA).

The award is given to an individual in recognition of exemplary commitment and contribution to the field, with an emphasis on specific contributions within the last six years. Weissling received her award during the 2022 NSLHA Fall Convention Oct. 14-15 at Nebraska Innovation Campus.

“An award like this is very special because it is given by an individual’s peers,” Weissling said. “Having people within my own professional ‘family’ recognize me with an award makes it especially meaningful.”

Weissling is in her 20th year as a faculty member at Nebraska, currently serving as a professor of practice, speech-language pathology program coordinator, and clinic coordinator for Barkley Speech Language and Hearing Clinic’s speech and language services. Her primary areas of interest in speech-language pathology include acquired neurogenic communication disorders, augmentative and alternative communication (AAC), adult developmental communication differences, and cognitive linguistic changes in aging.

Weissling is an active member of both NSLHA and the national organization, American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA), as well as the International Society for Augmentative and Alternative Communication (ISAAC). She also currently serves as the vice president of the Nebraska Stroke Association.
