Bryant retirement reception May 5

Miles Bryant, professor Department of Educational Administration, will be honored at a reception recognizing his retirement from the university. The reception is 3:00 to 5:00 p.m., Monday, May 5 at the International Quilt Study Center & Museum, 33rd and Holdrege streets on East Campus. Creswell earns Honorary Doctorate

Congratulations to John Creswell who earned an Honorary Doctorate from the University of Pretoria, South Africa.

According to the Department of University Relations at the University of Pretoria, “Creswell received the degree DEd (honoris causa) in recognition of the exceptional impact of his work on global research in education, as well as his expertise in research methodology and its wide applications in education.”

Zempleni will receive Outstanding Investigator Award for 2014

Janos Zempleni, professor in the Department of Nutrition and Health Sciences, will receive the Vitamin and Mineral Research Interest Section Outstanding Investigator Award for 2014.

VMRIS is an emphasis group in the American Society for Nutrition. Zempleni will receive the national award at the VMRIS business meeting Saturday, April 26th, at the Experimental Biology 2014 conference in San Diego, CA. The Experimental Biology annual meeting comprises over 14,000 scientists and exhibitors representing six sponsoring societies and multiple guest societies.

NHS students earn awards at Experimental Biology 2014 scientific meeting

Two NHS students have earned awards for their research abstracts submitted for the Experimental Biology 2014 scientific meeting, which will be held April 26-30 in San Diego, CA. Meshail Okla was awarded for an abstract in the category of energy and macronutrient metabolism, and Inhae Kang was awarded in the category of phenolic compounds and human research. Both students will be present their research at the conference.

UNL faculty receive Improving Teacher Quality grant

UNL faculty members, Mindi Searls (PI) and Leilani Arthurs (co-PI) in the Department of Earth & Atmospheric Sciences, and Elizabeth Lewis (co-PI) in the Department of Teaching, Learning and Teacher Education have received a state-funded 2-year Improving Teacher Quality grant to provide professional development in geoscience. Nebraska teachers at the grade 6-12 level will be funded to attend the 2014 Earth Science Institute to learn more about Earth science concepts and the geology of Nebraska.

Jameson, NHS major, awarded Fulbright Scholarship

Abigail Jameson, a nutrition and health sciences major, has been awarded a Fulbright English Teaching Assistantship Scholarship to Indonesia for the 2014-2015 academic year.

Jameson, a graduate of Grand Island Senior High School, is a member of UNL's William H. Thompson Learning Community. She is the first UNL student to receive a Fulbright Award this year.

The Fulbright Program, established in 1946 and funded by the U.S. Department of State, is designed to foster understanding between the United States and other countries.

Weiss awarded Fulbright Scholarship to continue work in India

Wendy Weiss, professor and director of the Robert Hillestad Textiles Gallery  at  the University of Nebraska has been awarded a Fulbright-Nehru Senior Scholar grant to to continue her research in Gujarat, India during the 2014-2015 academic year, the United States Department of State and the J. William Fulbright Foreign Scholarship Board announced.

CEHS faculty and staff are welcome to attend the Blended and Online Learning Colloquium: Supporting Research-Based Instructional Strategies with Technology, April 14th, Unity Room (212) in the Jackie Gaughan Multicultural Center. This Colloquium will highlight a number of instructional strategies and technologies that can be used in a diverse class environments (i.e., fully online, blended, flipped, and in-person).
