Baer, 2012 TLTE Ph.D. grad earns, AERA SIG Award


Recent CEHS Ph.D. graduate Stephanie Baer has been chosen to receive the Arts and Learning Special Interest Group (SIG) Dissertation Award that will be presented at the annual conference of the American Educational Research Association (AERA) in April in Philadelphia. Baer, who earned her Ph.D. from Teaching, Learning and Teacher Education in December 2012, researched the issue of student teacher fear in the arts classroom and how it affects students’ willingness to learn.

TLTE senior, Cortney, receives Mathematics Education Trust Prospective Teacher Award

Camilla Cortney, TLTE senior mathematics education student, was selected to receive one of four Mathematics Education Trust Prospective Teacher NCTM Annual Conference Attendance Awards. This award, totaling $1,200 plus conference registration, will enable her to attend the NCTM Annual Meeting and Exposition in New Orleans this April. Camilla's primary focus at the conference will be to attend sessions that will enable her to better serve English language learner students in her mathematics classes.

LaCost recognized by National Education Finance Conference

Barbara LaCost, associate professor in the Department of Educational Administration at UNL, is a recipient of the 2014 Distinguished Fellow Award from the National Education Finance Conference (NEFC).  Recipients of the Fellow Award are selected in recognition of exemplary research, practice, and policy advancement in both the K-12 and higher education environments. LaCost will be recognized at the NEFC Annual Conference, April 23-25 in Louisville, KY.

Donaldson Award for Excellence in Management from the University Association for Administrative Development. Hahn received the award Feb. 19 at a UAAD luncheon.

Susan Swearer receives Willa Cather/Charles Bessey professorship

Susan Swearer, professor of educational psychology, joined UNL in 1997 and is one of the preeminent leaders in the field of bullying prevention. Her research and contributions have positively impacted the lives of fellow researchers, colleagues, clinicians and children around the world. Swearer has been honored with fellow status by the American Psychological Association, has been elected to the Society for the Study of School Psychology, and is a recipient of a Distinguished Alumni Award.

Strautkalns receives Feb. CEHS Staff Council Star Award

Congratulations to Rasma Strautkalns, Staff Secretary for the Buros Center for Testing, who has received the February Staff Star Award.

Supporters of Strautkalns’ nomination had the following to say:

“Rasma manages the front office of the Buros Center and is the sole provider of clerical support for the publications unit, which publishes three major reference book series. She is both dependable and conscientious and demonstrates a natural tendency to help others.

New Hillestad exhibition features Japanese kimonos

"Japan and Fashion: Influence and Impact" opens in the Robert Hillestad Textiles Gallery on Monday, Feb. 24, 2014. The exhibit, curated by Barbara Trout, features Japanese influenced garments from the Department of Textiles, Merchandising & Fashion Design’s historic costume collection, along with traditional Japanese garments on loan for the exhibition. The exhibit is devoted to the interface between traditional Japanese dress and contemporary Western fashion.
