Duppong Hurley leads team that earns $3.2M grant to study program aimed at keeping kids in school

Kids with emotional and behavioral disorders are more likely to miss school, fail classes and drop out than any other group of students with disabilities. With support from a $3.2 million grant, UNL researchers are evaluating a unique new program that uses parent-to-parent support to encourage families to get the help they need to keep kids in school.

CEHS Tech EDGE conference unites technology and learning and educators

Tech EDGE 8 will be held from 10:00 a.m.-4:00 p.m., Tuesday, Aug. 20 at Henzlik Hall on the University of Nebraska­–Lincoln City Campus. The conference is for university instructors who are interested in learning new ways to use technology in the classroom, to improve instructional practice, and to expose students to 21st century learning tools.

CEHS partners with University of Pretoria

An author always hopes his words have impact. Ted Hamann is seeing first-hand how a 2009 journal article he co-authored led to an educational partnership between the University of Pretoria in South Africa and the University of Nebraska-Lincoln.

Hamann, an associate professor in the UNL College of Education and Human Sciences, was in Pretoria last week for the signing of a memorandum of understanding between UNL and the University of Pretoria.

African art gala and auction funds CEHS scholarships for education abroad

The College of Education and Human Sciences at the University of Nebraska–Lincoln and the Malaika Foundation are hosting a Gala Celebration of African Art, Cuisine and Fashion from 6-9 p.m., Friday, Sept. 27, 2013 at Quilt House, home of the International Quilt Study Center and Museum, 1523 N. 33rd St. in Lincoln. The gala will raise funds for scholarships to support education abroad experiences for students in CEHS.

Portnoy helps double number of credentialed psychology supervisors in China

A program led by Bob Portnoy is on course to double the number of credentialed psychology supervisors in China within two years.

Portnoy, director of counseling and psychological services at the University Health Center, developed the project as a Fulbright scholar based at China’s Nanjing University in 2011-12.

The CEHS Alumni Organization hosts its annual tailgate event from 8:00 - 10:00 a.m., Saturday, Sept. 14 in the Nebraska Union. Kickoff for the Nebraska vs. UCLA football game is scheduled for 11 a.m. The highlight of the tailgate will be the recognition of Tom Osborne as recipient of the 2013 CEHS Distinguished Alumnus Award.

Thirty-six CEHS athletes named Big Ten Scholars

Thirty-six CEHS Huskers across all sports have been named Big Ten Distinguished Scholars. The annual high honor roll was announced July 10.

The CEHS Huskers were among 637 student-athletes across 38 sports from all 12 Big Ten institutions to earn 3.7 or higher grade-point averages during the 2012-2013 academic year. Among the distinguished scholars, four CEHS athletes completed the year with a perfect 4.0 GPA (bolded names).

Kinsler picked to lead quilt study center

Alice Kinsler has been named interim executive director of the International Quilt Study Center and Museum. Kinsler assumes the post Aug. 5.

“It’s an incredible honor to serve as the interim executive director of the International Quilt Study Center and Museum and to help with the search for a permanent full-time executive director,” Kinsler said.

Frank L. Schmidt, Gallup Senior Scientist, University of Iowa will offer a talk, “Highlights from Four Decades of Discovery,”
12:00 - 1:00 p.m., August 13th at Gallup Riverfront Campus, 1001 Gallup Drive, Omaha, NE 68102.

Schmidt will focus on the most interesting discoveries from his career including important scientific advancements in psychology (e.g., individual differences, management, organizational interventions) and research methodology (e.g., meta-analysis, validity generalization).
