Nov. 13 Bio-Fiber Development Laboratory open house

The Department of Textiles, Merchandising & Fashion Design (TMFD) invites the campus community to an open house to showcase its new Bio-Fiber Development Laboratory, located on East Campus immediately west of Ag Hall, near the Holdrege St. entrance to east campus loop. A light lunch buffet will be served. Members of Yiqi Yang's research team will be on hand to welcome visitors and to answer questions.

HRTM students attend New York trade show

Nineteen students from the Hospitality, Restaurant and Tourism Management (HRTM) program leave Nov. 7 for a six-day education study tour to New York City. The main purpose of the trip is to attend the 2013 International Hotel, Motel and Restaurant Show (IHMRS) at the Jacob K. Javits Conference Center. The IHMRS is the largest hotel and restaurant tradeshow in the world. More than 750 exhibitors in the hotel and restaurant industry will participate.

Project Gaudi: An exploration of texture and form, Nov. 4-22

Spanish architect Antoni Gaudi (1852-1926) inspired Adrienne Anderson to design the garment and accessory collection presented in this exhibition. Through the work, Anderson explores architectyural form, innovative surface design techniques, and identity in dress.

The exhibit is on display at the Robert Hillestad Textiles Gallery. We welcome you to visit the extensive hand-created surface techniques and ornimentation.

Video of her Anderson's fashion show, which took place in October, will also be presented during this exhibit.

HRTM students host Mocktail Masterpiece Nov. 6, 7 p.m.

On Nov. 6 at 7pm in the Union Ballroom, HRTM students will host Mocktail Masterpiece, a night of painting a 12x16 masterpiece, and enjoying mocktails and appetizers. An instructor will walk you through how to make a beautiful painting, or you can create your own! All proceeds go to HRTM student scholarships.

Balaram "Eco-friendly Textile Paintings and Wall Hangings," Nov. 11-15

Padmini Tolat Balaram, a Fulbright-Nehru lecturer in textiles at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, will present an exhibition, "Eco-friendly Textile Paintings and Wall Hangings: Innovative Natural Dyed Textiles," at the Nebraska Union, 14th and R streets, Nov. 11-15.

Harris to give next NGN Series talk Nov. 13

Edward Harris, assistant professor of biochemistry, will present a talk titled, “Early Events in Fatty Liver Disease.” The talk will be Nov. 13 at noon in the East Campus Union. This brown bag talk is sponsored by Nebraska Gateway to Nutrigenomics, part of nutrition, health, and science.

Harris’ research focus is on a small family of Stabilin receptors, which are primarily responsible for the clearance of GAGs from both lymphatic and circulatory systems.

Meisels to speak Nov. 11: "Tested Before Their Time? Accountability and Early Learning"

The Department of Child, Youth, and Family Studies presents Samuel Meisels, Executive Director, Buffett Early Childhood Institute. Meisels will present his talk as part of the Helen Kelley Symposium for Excellence in Education.

Meisels will speak Nov. 11, 1:00 p.m. to 2:30 p.m at the East Campus Union (rooms to be posted). The talk will be followed by breakout sessions 3:00 p.m to 5:00 p.m.

Swearer presents Nebraska Lecture Nov. 7

Susan Swearer, professor Educational Psychology, will present a talk entitled, " Creating a Kinder World: Empowering Youth to End Bullying," Nov. 7, 3:30 p.m. in the Nebraska Union Auditorium. The lecture is free to the public and will be followed by a reception.

The lecture will be live webcast at research.unl.edu/nebraskalectures.
