Snyder earns Christa McAuliffe Prize for Courage and Excellence in Education

Inspired teaching has earned Lincoln Northeast High School reading teacher Kimberly Snyder the Christa McAuliffe Prize for Courage and Excellence in Education.

The College of Education and Human Sciences at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln presents the annual award to a teacher who exemplifies the character of Christa McAuliffe, an educator who died in the 1986 Challenger disaster. Snyder will be recognized at a banquet March 3 in Lincoln.

CYAF-authored article named best of 2012

A peer-reviewed article authored by UNL researchers in the Nebraska Center for Research on Children, Youth, Families and Schools has been named the 2012 Article of the Year by the academic journal School Psychology Review.

Susan Sheridan, the lead author of the article and director of the center, accepted the award Feb. 14 at the NASP's 2013 Annual Convention in Seattle. The award is presented for an article's contributions to research and practice in school psychology, its interest to the journal's readership, and its overall impact on advancing the profession.

Jean Detlefsen named 2013 Western Region Higher Education Art Educator

Jean Detlefsen, a lecturer in Teaching, Learning and Teacher Education, has been named the 2013 Western Region Higher Education Art Educator of the Year. The award will be presented during the National Art Education Association National Convention, March 7-10 in Fort Worth, Texas.

The award, which is determined through a peer review of nominations, recognizes the contributions, service and achievements of an outstanding NAEA member at the regional level.

Donohue will present next NGN Seminar Series Talk Feb. 20

Terry Donohue, UNMC Department of Research and Internal Medicine
Omaha VAMC and UNMC, will present the next NGN Seminar Series Talk Feb. 20 at Noon, Nebraska East Union, Sunflower Room. A brown bag lunch with beverages and dessert will be provided.

Donohue will present his talk entitled, “Mechanisms of Ethanol-induced Steatosis.” Donohue has had a long-standing interest in catabolic systems and how they are affected by toxic compounds, such as ethanol.  

All interested faculty, postdocs, students, and staff are invited to attend this NGN seminar.

Jing Xue selected as finalist for Nutritional Sciences Council Awards Competition

Jing Xue, a graduate student working with Janos Zempleni’s lab, has been named one of 12 finalists for the American Society for Nutrition’s Nutritional Sciences Council 2013 Graduate Student Research Awards Competition. Her abstract is entitled “Epigenetic Synergies between Methyl Donors and Biotin in Gene Repression are Mediated by Holocarboxylase Synthetase (HLCS).”

'Posing with Patchwork' offers context to quilts in photos

Historic photographs do more than capture a moment in time. They tell a story. "Posing with Patchwork: Quilts in Photographs, 1855-1955," a new exhibition at the International Quilt Study Center and Museum at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, will explore the larger, human story conveyed in historic photographs of quilts.

Bischoff named chair of CYAF

Richard Bischoff has been a faculty member at UNL since 1998. He moved to Nebraska from San Diego, California where he taught at the University of San Diego and worked as a Marriage and Family Therapist in a primary care medical clinic. It was there that he developed an interest and expertise in collaborative healthcare and Medical Family Therapy. At Nebraska, Bischoff has been able to apply collaborative care principles to work in rural medical settings and to do this through the innovative use of videoconferencing as a primary treatment delivery medium.

The University of Virginia’s Robert Pianta, a nationally recognized scholar in early childhood and K-12 education, will address research on the improvement of teacher-child interactions in the classroom during a Feb. 26 visit to the University of Nebraska-Lincoln.

Staff Council sponsors brown bag lunch on India, Feb. 19

Staff Council invites staff, faculty, and students to a presentation on India by Dipra Jha, Assistant Professor of Practice in the Department of Nutrition and Health Sciences.

The presentation will be Feb. 19, 12:00 p.m. to 1:00 p.m. in Ruth Leverton Hall, room 304.
