Boys and porn: Researchers find age of first exposure linked to sexist attitudes

The age when boys first see pornography may help explain why some young men become playboys and others seek power over women, according to new psychological research from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln.

The Nebraska study, based upon a survey of 330 undergraduate men ages 17 to 54, was a first look at whether the age at which boys first viewed pornography shaped their attitudes about masculinity and sexuality.

Hussin's leadership recognized by Boy Scouts

Roz Hussin, an instructional design technology specialist with Online and Distance Education and CEHS, received the Whitney M. Young Jr. service award from the Boy Scouts of America. The honor recognizes outstanding service through the development and implementation of scouting opportunities from rural or low-income urban backgrounds. Hussin was recognized for her involvement with and leadership in the ScoutREACH scholarship program, which allows Nebraska students in the university's service learning program to volunteer as local Boy Scout leaders.

Bullying Think Tank hosted by Bullying Research Network

The Bullying Research Network (BRNET) is hosting its seventh annual Think Tank July 27 and 28 in Seattle, Washington. Sue Swearer, Willa Cather Professor of Educational Psychology in the College of Education and Human Sciences, is co-director of BRNET and helped found the international organization.

Ray, Ditmars lead students to Nicaragua for humanitarian audiology trip

When Stacie Ray and Hannah Ditmars came up with the idea to take students from the audiology program to Nicaragua to serve a population in desperate need of hearing health care services, their focus was on building a sustainable program. As the two professors depart with six graduate students for their second annual study abroad trip to the country, that focus remains.

Schoenrock and Moser honored by ACTE

Two CEHS faculty members have been recognized by the Association for Career and Technical Education (ACTE) for their excellence in preparing future teachers. Sheree Moser, assistant professor of practice in Child, Youth and Family Studies, is ACTE’s Region V Postsecondary Teacher of the Year. Mona Schoenrock, lecturer in Teaching, Learning and Teacher Education, is ACTE’s Nebraska Teacher Educator of the Year.

New video explains Males’ math research

A new video from the Office of Research and Economic Development at the University of Nebraska–Lincoln highlights the research of TLTE professor Lorraine Males. She is studying mathematics texts used with teacher preparation students. The research is funded by a $630,00 NSF CAREER grant.

HRTM's Jha leads luxury hospitality workshops in India

University of Nebraska–Lincoln faculty member Dipra Jha recently delivered a series of workshops for luxury hospitality professionals across India. Jha, an assistant professor of practice in hospitality, restaurant and tourism management, spent May 12-31 in India as professor in residence with the Oberoi Center of Learning and Development (OCLD). The center is part of Oberoi Group, a hospitality conglomerate that owns and operates some of the most recognized luxury hotels in the world.

CEHS announces new department chairs

EDAD, NHS chairs announced

Dean Marjorie Kostelnik announced today the appointment of two department chairs in the College of Education and Human Sciences. After a national search, Nick Pace was selected chair of the Educational Administration Department (EDAD) and will begin his duties July 17. Linda Boeckner has been named interim chair of Nutrition and Health Sciences (NHS). Pace is currently professor and chair of Educational Leadership in the College of Education at the University of Northern Iowa.

Maas named CEHS Staff Star Award recipient

Michelle Maas, research project assistant in the Department of Educational Psychology, has been named a CEHS Staff Star Award recipient. CEHS Staff Council President Nancy McConkey made the announcement and presentation in February.
