Cramer’s nutritional supplement research published in JAMDA

Joel Cramer, associate professor of nutrition and health sciences, was recently published in JAMDA, the journal of the Society for Post-acute and Long-term Care Medicine (AMDA), for his research with experimental oral nutritional supplements in older adults with mild to moderate sarcopenia. Cramer and his research colleagues partnered with Abbott Nutrition to “determine the intersections between malnutrition and sarcopenia, and to look for new evidence-based care practices to ultimately improve outcomes for vulnerable patients,” Cramer told “Caring for the Ages,” the newspaper of AMDA.

NASPA regional case study team wins competition.

Case study team wins NASPA regional competition

The student affairs case study team from the Department of Educational Administration has once again brought home the hardware from the NASPA (Student Affairs Administrators in Higher Education) regional conference. This year’s case study was even more competitive because the competition was part of a joint conference of regions IV-W and IV-E held Nov. 15-17 in St. Louis. The team of Linh Phu, Ashley Hurt, Kassi Woods and Stephanie Blair took first place.

Internship consortium re-accredited

The Nebraska Internship Consortium in Professional Psychology (NICPP) has received full re-accreditation (seven years) from the American Psychological Association (APA). The NICPP is one of the largest internship consortia in the United States accredited by APA. Annually, NICPP trains 34 pre-doctoral interns in clinical, counseling, and school psychology from across the United States. There are six agencies across southeastern Nebraska who comprise the NICPP.

Mary Willis, professor of nutrition and health sciences, is one of five University of Nebraska-Lincoln faculty members named fellows of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, the world's largest general scientific society. Fellows are selected by their peers for scientifically or socially distinguished achievements that advance science or its application.

Students gain skills in early childhood autism spectrum disorders

Micheale Marcus puts her hands in the air. Then on her nose. Then on the table—a miniature one, where she sits with her client: a 3-year-old toddler who mimics her every move.

Marcus, a second-year graduate student, is receiving training in early childhood autism spectrum disorders through a new traineeship offered in the College of Education and Human Sciences’ school psychology graduate program.

Whitmer Scholarship aims to help early childhood educators

A new scholarship for students in the University of Nebraska-Lincoln's College of Education and Human Sciences will help to educate and prepare future generations of teachers, who are especially needed to provide early childhood education in Nebraska.

Mae Whitmer of Lincoln established the Bill and Mae Whitmer Early Childhood Education Scholarship Fund as a permanently endowed fund at the University of Nebraska Foundation. The scholarship was created in memory of her husband, a Nebraska alumnus, who died in 2012.

Nebraska Letterbox Club selected for Celebrate Literacy Award

The Nebraska Letterbox Club, a program organized by the University of Nebraska-Lincoln’s Academy for Child and Family Well Being (ACFW), was selected as the recipient of the Celebrate Literacy Award by the Eastern Nebraska Reading Council.

The award will be presented at the next Eastern Nebraska Reading Council meeting, scheduled for 7 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 10, at the Barnes & Noble at SouthPointe Pavilions in Lincoln.

TLTE’s Gatti earns prestigious Spencer grant

Lauren Gatti closely tracks new developments in teacher preparation. When the U.S. Department of Education announced new regulations for teacher preparation programs earlier this month, she immediately started pouring over them. Gatti’s close attention to teacher education and her unique research in teacher residency programs has resulted in a $50,000 grant from the Spencer Foundation Small Grants Program. Gatti will be working on the grant with colleagues from DePaul University and National-Louis University in Chicago.

Vo receives CADRE Fellowship

Tina Vo, a CEHS doctoral student in Teaching, Learning and Teacher Education, has been accepted to the 2016-17 CADRE Fellows program of the Community for Advancing Discovery Research in Education, a program funded through the National Science Foundation (NSF).
