The College of Education and Human Sciences' Textiles, Merchandising & Fashion Design students are teaming up once again with students from across the UNL campus to present their biennial runway show, taking place this year on Earth Day, Friday April 22, in the Nebraska Union’s Centennial Ballroom.

Benson teacher is 2016 CEHS McAuliffe Award recipient

Joseph DiCostanzo, a social studies teacher and coach from Omaha Benson High School Magnet, is the recipient of the 2016 Christa McAuliffe Prize for Courage and Excellence in Education. The College of Education and Human Sciences at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln (UNL) presents the annual award to a Nebraska teacher who exemplifies the character of Christa McAuliffe, the first teacher in space, who died in the 1986 Challenger space shuttle disaster. DiCostanzo will be recognized at a banquet March 13 on the UNL campus.

Buffett Early Childhood Institute to announce statewide survey results

More than 7,100 Nebraskans recently responded to the largest public opinion survey ever conducted in the state about the care and education of young children. Findings of the Buffett Early Childhood Institute/Gallup Survey on Early Childhood Care and Education in Nebraska will be shared from 8:30-10 a.m., March 29 at the Sheldon Museum of Art (note this is a location change) on the University of Nebraska-Lincoln campus. Opening remarks will be made by Senator Galen Hadley, speaker of the Nebraska Legislature.

Williams leads massage therapy study in rehabilitation hospital

When Alexis Verzal first arrived at Madonna Rehabilitation Hospital in Lincoln, Neb., her future held many more questions than answers. While her parents Tiffany and Brandon Verzal grappled with these unknowns, this much they knew: their world had been turned upside down.

To help families like the Verzals, researchers from UNL’s College of Education and Human Sciences are embarking on a project to reduce stress for primary caregivers whose children are recovering from a severe injury or illness.

Sheree Moser Wins FCCLA Award

Sheree Moser, CYAF Assistant Professor of Practice, has earned the Nebraska Family, Career and Community Leaders of America (FCCLA) Distinguished Service Award. 

The Distinguished Service Award recognizes outstanding contributions and continuing service by individuals whose primary responsibilities are directly related to the organization’s programs. Dr. Moser volunteers for FCCLA judging and state leadership events and helps organize state conferences.

As the state's demographics continue to change, Nebraska schools are increasingly seeking the services of bilingual teachers. School districts from Omaha to Lexington are adopting dual language programs to address the achievement challenges of more diverse student populations. Zach Hammack of the Daily Nebraskan recently wrote an article highlighting this education issue and consulted Theresa Catalano, assistant professor in Teaching, Learning and Teacher Education, for his story.

UNL to collaborate with Oman Tourism College

The University of Nebraska-Lincoln has signed an agreement with Oman Tourism College to facilitate academic collaboration between the institutions.

The memorandum of understanding establishes a partnership in teaching, research, student exchange, faculty exchange, technology transfer, publication, curriculum development, joint projects and training.

UNL’s Tech EDGE earns national recognition

Tech EDGE, a collaborative partnership between UNL and eight Nebraska PK-12 partner school districts, has been awarded the 2016 Best Practice Award for the Innovative Use of Technology from the American Association of Colleges for Teacher Education. AACTE will present the award to Guy Trainin and Laurie Friedrich from the Department of Teaching, Learning and Teacher Education, on Feb. 25 at the group’s annual conference in Las Vegas.

High risk drinking consortium gets national attention

A CEHS housed program in the Department of Educational Psychology that has worked since 1979 to prevent alcohol and drug abuse in Nebraska was on a national stage Feb. 10. Megan Hopkins, project manager for the Nebraska Collegiate Consortium To Reduce High Risk Drinking (NCC), participated in a national webinar to rollout a new toolkit for prevention practitioners. The toolkit is a project of the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration's (SAMHSA) Center for the Application of Prevention Technologies.
