CEHS, TLTE lead the way in critical language education

The University of Nebraska-Lincoln is one of the best places in the United States for education and teacher professional development in critical languages. If you don’t believe it, just ask Professor Ali Moeller. Moeller, a professor in the Department of Teaching, Learning and Teacher Education in the College of Education and Human Sciences, is co-director (along with graduate student Sheri Hurlbut) of UNL’s STARTALK language immersion programs, which have been funded through STARTALK for the past four years.

Columbus teacher selected as Battey Award recipient

High school students often dread taking a chemistry class. But not Jane Dusel-Misfeldt's students.

On Friday, May 29, the Scotus Central Catholic High School teacher from Columbus will receive the 2015 Freda Battey Distinguished Educator Award. Presented by the College of Education and Human Sciences at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, the award recognizes excellence in teaching and comes with a cash award for both the teacher and school. It will be presented at a luncheon in the Nebraska Union.

Science olympiad medals

CEHS co-hosts National Science Olympiad Tournament

More than 5,000 middle- and high-school students, educators and parents from across the nation will attend the Science Olympiad National Tournament at UNL through May 16. Opening events today (Friday, May 15) include a STEM Expo and an Executive Egg Drop.

Jan Myers-Newbury: A Touch of Kismet - Quilts, Color, Pattern, Chance exhibition talk

Jan Myers-Newbury will speak about her work on Sunday, June 7, 2015 at 3:00 p.m. in Room 11 of the Human Sciences Building on East campus.  The talk is free and the public is invited.  A reception will follow in the Robert Hillestad Textiles Gallery.
"You would think that, as many times as I have unwrapped a pole after dyeing, I would become ho-hum about the results.  But it never fails:  I can't wait to see how each piece turns out.  I guess that's because I've realized I only have a certain amount of control and the rest is kismet."

CEHS grads lead Civic Engagement

Six CEHS students who are graduating this spring have earned a certificate in civic engagement through UNL's Center for Civic Engagement. These six students represent almost half of the UNL students who earned certificates this year. In a college that is dedicated to enhancing the lives of individuals, families, schools and communities and strengthening the relationships among them, CEHS is proud of these students for building their capacity to change our world for the better.

CEHS grad collaborates with Häagen-Dazs Ice Cream

Christopher Elbow, a 1996 graduate from the Department of Nutrition and Health Sciences, recently announced a collaboration between his specialty chocolate brand and Häagen-Dazs ice cream. Working with culinary professionals from across the country, the ice cream giant created its “Artisan Collection” of six new flavors, including “Spiced Pecan Turtle” from Christopher Elbow Artisanal Chocolates. According to the company’s Facebook page, the flavor is based on a chocolatey treat called Venezuelan Spice Turtles.

Governor Pete Ricketts recently appointed Stacie Ray, associate professor of practice in Special Education and Communication Disorders, to the board of commissioners for the Nebraska Commission for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing.

TLTE alum Seiboldt selected for Knowles Fellowship

Cassie Seiboldt graduated from Teaching, Learning and Teacher Education last May and has been teaching mathematics to students at Lincoln Northeast High School. Like all TLTE graduates, she was taught that teaching is a profession that requires you to continuously hone your skills and that it's important to seek new and better ways to reach students. In April she was notified that she has been selected for a prestigious Knowles Science Teaching Foundation Fellowship.
