Corsets of Empowerment by Dorsa Farzi and Sustainable Fashion Identified by Michaela Lentsch

The capstone projects of two master’s students in the Department of Textiles, Merchandising and Fashion Design are the newest exhibition at the Robert Hillestad Textiles Gallery. Dorsa Farzi and Michaela Lentsch are hosting an open house to celebrate the opening of their exhibition from 5-6:30 p.m. on Friday, April 11.

Farzi’s show, “Corsets of Empowerment,” explores the intersection of fashion and activism, using contemporary design to spark conversations about gender equality and social change. The collection has four uniquely crafted corsets, each representing a significant women’s rights movement from around the world. Three of the corsets are accompanied by specially design garments that enhance their narrative.

“This project is a tribute to women who have fought and those still fighting – including the ones I’ve stood beside,” Farzi said.

Lentsch’s show, “Sustainable Fashion Identified – An exploration and education of sustainable apparel,” is a collection of five ensembles showcasing various methods of sustainable design, materials and construction that can be used to inspire future sustainable designs and techniques. It includes the use of natural fabric dye, a multi-functional garment, a zero-waste design, and more.

“With more sustainable fashion we can change the world for the better, helping the environment and improving lives,” Lentsch said.

The exhibition featuring the work of Farzi and Lentsch, both master’s students in the apparel design specialization, runs through Aug. 1, 2025. The Robert Hillestad Textiles Gallery, which is open weekdays from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., is located on the second floor of the Gwendolyn Newkirk Human Sciences Building on the University of Nebraska-Lincoln’s East Campus.
