Maddy Cotey is a junior from Parma, Michigan, majoring in secondary education: mathematics.
Why did you choose your program in the College of Education and Human Sciences?
I chose the College of Education and Human Sciences because I wanted to help people reach their true potential. I chose secondary math education because it is an area that I loved learning about in school and I want future students to feel that same confidence and joy in the subject. Math is crucial to every area of the world, so I want to help people reach their personal goals in a subject that usually gets a lot of pushback from students. CEHS was the right fit for me because they want to achieve those same goals in their own students. The staff and faculty push every student to be the best version of themselves, while also understanding that sometimes students need a helping hand instead of a push.
What activities and organizations are you involved in on campus?
I am involved in the Cornhusker Marching Band as a member of the flagline. I am the co-treasurer of the Figure Skating Team. I am in the Honors program, serving as a peer mentor now. I am also in the IronN. I also am a math tutor.
What is one thing that has stood out from your experience in CEHS so far?
One thing that has stood out from my experience is how invested the faculty is in my academic and extracurricular adventures. My advisor, Kayla, is amazing and always willing to help with whatever I need. Dr. Harpster is always interested in my extracurricular activities, showing up to my skating exhibition. Them showing up in more ways than academically truly show me that they care and that makes me feel important within the college.
What is one piece of advice you would share with new or prospective CEHS students?
Never be afraid to reach out to faculty. All of the faculty wants to see you succeed, so they will do anything and everything they can to help you achieve your dreams. You just need to reach out when you need the help.
What are your career goals?
I plan to become a high school math teacher in the future!
