Shereen Ahmed is a freshman nutrition science major from Lincoln, Nebraska. She is one of three College of Education and Human Sciences students selected to participate in the First Year Research Experience Program at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln.
Why did you choose the University of Nebraska-Lincoln?
I chose UNL for its proximity to home and the great people I met through the Upward Bound Math and Science program in high school.
What activities and organizations are you involved in on campus?
I’m currently involved in research through FYRE with Dr. Nicole Sexton, MENA and MPHA. However, as I spend more time at UNL, I hope to become more involved.
What has been your favorite class and why?
My favorite class so far is Life 120! I love how we connect all the knowledge we learned in K-12 and delve deeper into how each process occurs. The professor, Dr. Burks, makes the material interesting with her interactive learning techniques which allows us to focus more in class. My favorite unit so far is cellular respiration.
What are your career goals?
I’m strongly interested in becoming a dentist in the future. I’ve been interested in the field of healthcare for quite a long time and I currently work in a hospital as a Patient Care Technician. Being able to make an impact in the community by helping individuals maintain good oral hygiene no matter their economic background is a dream I’m hoping to make true.
