Michael Merten and Miechelle McKelvey were selected to attend 2026-27 Big Ten Academic Alliance leadership programs.

Michael Merten, interim dean of the College of Education and Human Sciences, and Miechelle McKelvey, chair of the Department of Special Education and Communications Disorders, are among the faculty selected by the University of Nebraska-Lincoln's Office of the Executive Vice Chancellor to attend Big Ten Academic Alliance leadership programs this year.

Merten is one of five faculty selected to participate in the Academic Leadership Program, and McKelvey is one of five selected for the Department Executive Officers Program.

Joining Merten as ALP Fellows at Nebraska are Anthony Bushard, professor and interim director of the Glenn Korff School of Music; Valerie Jones, Fred and Gladys Seaton Professor and interim associate dean of research and faculty affairs for the College of Journalism and Mass Communications; Laura Muñoz, associate professor of history and director of the Institute for Ethnic Studies; and Thomas Padilla, associate professor and associate dean for research and learning for University Libraries.

Established in 1989, the Academic Leadership Program develops the academic leadership and managerial skills of nominated faculty who have demonstrated exceptional ability and academic promise. ALP Fellows from across the Big Ten attend a virtual welcome session and three in-person seminars at different Big Ten campuses and the Big Ten Conference Center. Nebraska’s ALP Fellows also participate in on-campus meetings throughout the academic year with members of the university’s academic leadership.

The four faculty joining McKelvey as Department Executive Officers Program Fellows are Özgür Araz, U.S. Bank Distinguished Professor and chair of supply chain management and analytics in the College of Business; Kate Brooks, professor and department head of agricultural economics and agricultural leadership, education and communication; Sarah Gervais, professor and chairperson of psychology; and Larkin Powell, professor and director in the School of Natural Resources.

The Department Executive Officers Program is a hybrid program with three online synchronous sessions and one in-person workshop. Each year approximately 85 new department executive officers across the Big Ten Academic Alliance universities participate in the leadership development program that includes topics such as conflict resolution, mentoring, faculty development, performance reviews and group problem-solving.
